what should a late model american strat neck pickup measure? does 6.5 k sound about right? i am trying to calibrate my meter, and i the only thing i have to measure is a leftover am. strat neck pickup.

thanks

6.3K to 6.5K seems about right for a Strat neck pickup patterned after the early 60's Strat pickups. Some 50's models were more underwound by comparism.

IF all you're trying to do is calibrate your meter, then get yourself down to Radio Shack and buy a handful of decent resistors over a range of values.

I think the American Standard Strat pickups were around 5.9K neck and middle, and 6.5K bridge (at least I know the bridge was hotter than N/M).

I assumed that he meant an American Std. or American Series pickup when he mentioned a late model American Strat pickup, but it's not clear. Either way, given typical pickup spec tolerances, it's not the best way to calibrate a meter.

i am not sure if it is an american std. or american series. i can only tell you that according to fender, by giving them the number stamped on the plastic base plate, it is an american neck pickup.

something interesting though, the leads are black and white, while the american standard set i just go have red/white, blue/white, and yellow/white leads. so, i am guessing that there is some kind of difference. anyone have any ideas?

Manufacturers will often color code the middle and bridge pickup with something other than black and white. I believe the Tex-Mex pickups in the MIM Strats might be color coded for position rather than all three being black and white. Lew

does fender just pick a color at random then? i am just curious why the am. std. pickups i just got are colored the way they are. i think i know which pickup is which.

one thing, i was surprised to see that my pickup with the yellow/white leads read a little over 7k. i am assuming this is the bridge pickup, the middle read a little over 6k and the neck read just under 6k. sound about right to you lew?

That does sound about right for a calibrated set. :)
