I bought a Ibanez GSA-60 today from GC, I love this guitar but im used to playing on jumbo frets where the GSA has med's. IM not sure if im going to get use to it, i like the guitar too much to take it back. Anybody else ever run into this problem ? Is there realley that big of a difference in playability, or is it just me ? Feedback please.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

Well, I dont think I've ever used a guitar with jumbo frets. Are you sure it doesnt have 'medium jumbo' frets? I was under the impression that most guitars come with "medium-jumbo" frets . . . I think I read about how that was the standard on fender guitars in the frontline a year or so ago. I think most LP's come with those too.

I may be wrong though(happens a time or two every year), it might be 'medium' and 'jumbo', but I thought there was also a medium-jumbo that was kinda the standard.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

SpoonMan, Yeh Fender has Med/Jumbos, but like my Ibanez RG's they have Jumbos. I went to their web site and it said : RG's Jumbo and GSA Med's, i even checked over at ESP and they offer certian guitars with Extra Jumbos's so thats why im asking.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

yes i find a difference in feel between medium and jumbo frets. my strat has meduims, and my ltd has extra jumbos. it does feel much different.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

my guitars are like that too...

every guitar that i have ever played had a differen't feel to it, after playing them for a few i always get used to it extremely fast.
it's never been so much the frets i had to get used to but the texture of the back of the neck and the differen't styles. each of my guitars have a differen't style like the rg has the really thin wizard neck and my wolfgang has the beastly evh neck. My other guitars fall in between those two sizes.

if you use it for a week i bet you will be used to it and think nothing of it.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

I used to have and Ibie RG with jumbo frets. I now have a Gibson LP with medium frets.

The mediums are better for string-bending, the jumbos for legato phrasing. In time, not only will you get used to it, but your playing style will change as well. You may grow to really enjoy bending over time.:D

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

I can only really play med-jumbo. I don't like jumbo's myself. I have a light pick attack, but itend to dig into the neck when fretting. Jumbo frets (for me) pitch sharp because of this.

matter of preference.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

Most of my guitars have med-jumbo frets, but I have one guitar with medium frets on it. You'll get use to it. Mediums are great for shredding, you can play high speed, legato runs with greater ease. Jumbos are great for bending notes. Though you can do anything you want with either fret style, each has its strengths.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

I find it interesting that Korovamilkdud and XXX-Factor's opinions are at polar opposites on this issue....

To each his own though. If it feels good, play it!

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

Thanks everyone, great advice. Il play it for another week or two and see if my openion changes, im sure it will.

Re: Med vs. Jumbo frets ?

I had most of my experience with medium frets on my Gibsons and Fender. When I first got an Ibanez it felt different but mostly because of that amazing Wizard neck. I also experienced easier legato playing with jumbos, yet better bending with the mediums. The necks of my Gibson and Ibanez are totally different and after more than 3 months of playing with the Ibanez I still can't get used to the difference. But don't let me scare ya off here, the Gibson neck is much thicker and wider, as is the fretboard. So it has very very very little to do with the frets :)
