Mesa 4x12 and B52 at212 for $200?

Hey guys,

Been scarce around here lately, in school piddling as much as I can and restraining my GAS, but in a moment of weakness I saw this setup on CL. Guy is moving, I actually went to check it out and beat is putting it lightly. The cab has a non original grille, no tolex, has been spraypainted and most of the lettering is missing off of the jackplate but it's definitely a mesa. One V30 has a dime size hole. The at212 supposedly works but only definitely in solid state mod.

Basically, should I go for it? Will the guitar gods smite me for passing on a Mesa cab for this kind of price, regardless of condition??

are the other speakers V30s as well? If so what's their condition? It may be worth it for 3 speakers? If it's beat to hell and not fixable, pass.

supposedly all 4 work, even with the cone hole, and supposedly the amp works. My concern is basically that if i get it and its bum then he's across the country. Considering the amp a "freebie" and the cab worth the 200...

Hard call on that.

The Mesa cabs are pretty tough stuff and weigh a ton. So i'd say they're built to last.

But the fact that it looks like someone tried to destroy it makes it less interesting. I say let them go.

It sounds like a good deal, but if the tolex has been changed, and it's spraypainted, there's a hole in the speaker, just think about how much abuse and damage that's been through. Obviously it's not well taken care of.

That said, what if all speakers are shot?

Do you really want to invest in retolexing it? Maybe having to get 4 new speakers?

It sounds like a good deal, but then it sounds like you would need to put in more money and effort to make it presentable.

I say hold off. I saw an avatar vintage 212 cab with v30 and a gt75 for $250. Deals can be found.

pass. not worth the trouble or money it will take to fix it up. That speaker is worthless without a replaced cone. The cab is near worthless without original or new grill, logo, tolex etc.

you'd be better off just getting a used one in good condition. And don't buy amps that are only half working.

Do you care that it's beat? I wouldn't. If it has three good V30's in it it's worth more than $200 already. Why pass this? If it's a legit mesa cab with three good speakers and only the cosmetics are bad, yeah I think it would be dumb to pass on it.

That said, if it's damaged structurally, then yeah, I might pass.

Sounds like the same ad I was looking at uptown in NoLa, I was thinking about the same & found this on a b52 at212 google search, glad I did though, didn't know it was that beat up, but you could probably offer him $200 if he's truly moving tomorrow...it's worth a shot...

Welcome! He came straight to 200. Actually got really pissed at me that I didn't jump on it for that. Go figure but another red flag.

I guess it comes down to when is a mesa no longer a mesa

I believe it was at one point a mesa cab, but for the life of me knowing what I know I couldn't prove it to you. He has a badge but it's been spray painted yellow, other than that no markings. the backplate screw holes had been stripped out but two screws had been shoved in to hold the plate on. Definitely a home rewiring of the speakers too which makes me nervous. As far as structure, King. No way to tell as the thing had been coated in black spraypaint all over, with some other colors showing through in some spots. Even if i plugged up and checked sound I don't think I'm good enough to say for sure the speakers weren't damaged.

Anyway, pick it up so I don't have to think about it, but honestly my conclusion was the thing was so rough I wouldn't want it in my house and that there had to be a better way to get three (maybe) working V30's. I may be dumb for passing but this is my reasoning and I'm stickin to it

If you don't mind me asking, how was/is the condition of the B52..? B/c I'd be more interested in that than the cabinet...

I'd have done the same thing. You don't need to inherit someone else's problems.

I would of offered $150 and taken out the speakers and if the cab is that bad dump it... But a couple years ago I scored a beater Randall cab with 3 good Celestion G12-65 watt speakers. 4th one had a hole in the cone. Paid $150 for it. A week later I sold 2 of the speakers for $100 each, a third one for $150 and the cab a few weeks later for $50. The 4th one I patched and use in my cab today.
