Finally got my new preamp tubes in the mail today and got some time to swap them out. I have never changed the preamp tubes in an amp before the power tubes are exposed but these have metal covers on them. The amp is a Mesa Boogie Express 5:50 what do I have to do to get these covers off.

Re: Mesa Boogie 5:50 preamp tubes

push the sleeve towards the chassis, then turn it until it stops (shouldnt be much) > lift sleeve away from the chassis, exposing the tube. be sure and let us know how it sounds with fresh glass

Alright I got the covers off and replaced them....The jury is still out on this one. :33: I played for a while and I have to get to bed so I thought I would comment real quick. Although the new Tungsols do what I wanted them to I think Im actually missing something from the original tubes. Im going to switch the new and old in and out of other positions tomorrow and see what happens.

The Mesa express is a real interesting amp to swap tubes about in (mines a 5:25) as you have the different modes to play with. ALso as the eq is more integrated into the gain sections different gain tubes in different locations really affect how the amp responds.
Assuming the tube layout is similar on 5:50 to the 5:25 do watch out for where the tubes are actually physically placed... they weren't in the order I expected them to be in.
