MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

Anyone familiar with these?

They have something I think is pretty cool...they call it "Progressive Linkage™": the power section allows you to switch between or combine 2x6V6 & 4xEL84 for 15, 33, or 38 Watts, of Pure Class A Power / 5x12AX7, 1x5AR4

A local guy is selling one & I was curious............

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

This particular Boogie IMO is the only one I would buy. I have a friend who had one a few years back. It was an interesting Amp in the sense the different tube selections can be selected from a dial on the front of the Amp. Pretty cool design, but I found that I tended to gravitae to the "Fender" type of sound.

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

I own a blue angel 1x12, which does the fender sound better than most fender amps. i tend to keep it on the 6v6 setting the most, and the reverb on this thing is better than any fender i have heard. very anti-boogie, with no master volume.

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

I talked one of my students into buying one of those. They are very cool amps to be sure.

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

very cool indeed. i have played thru them a few times and a buddy of mine as a 1x12 that ive played a bunch. very cool amps!!

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

To me, they sound like a Fender that has more dense mids and more compression, which is good. They still have that early Boogie tone, but the 4-10's give it a more open vintage quality. I think Kevin Eubanks from the Tonight Show band has used Blue Angels for years. It's kind of a compressed Fender Fusiony tone, to my ears.

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

I owned the BA head, and ran it into a recto 2x12 with v30s. It was a great sounding, reliable unit. To me, it sounds like a cross between a fender deluxe and an ac30, with only a hint of the signature early boogie tone. It's a great, vintage sounding roots/jazz/blues/rock amp.

Joe Gore wrote a glowing review of the BA many years ago in Guitar Player, and it stuck in my mind. So, once I got a good job, the first thing i did was go out and buy one.

To this day, it's the only mesa amp that I genuinely like aside from the mark1 (which is basically a gained up fender princeton, anyway). No 'cludgy mark series' mids or 'recto emasculatory' scoop, and great reverb. I had an original issue, blue leather/tan grill head, which looked beautiful. Unfortunately, my recto cab was black, so no Gearjoneser approved matching kit heaven.

Another cool thing: not a single issue in over three years of constant use. For that reason alone, Randall and Doug will always have my admiration.

Not long ago I plugged a PRS McCarty soapbar into a croc-skin BA 1x12 combo, and the tone knocked me out. I'd definitely get another if one popped up at the right price.

I miss mine, though I do get to play it occasionally as my soundguy now owns it.

Well, got the hurricane panels up on the house so, I'm gonna go take a look at this amp in about an hour or so. From what I've read both here & other places, it's a pretty damn good amp.............we'll see what the guy wants for it & I'll get back to you fine fellas!!!

Thanks for all the responses.

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

blaaaahhh...you'll hate the versatility and overall quality of it!!!

i'll take the dumb thing off your hands if you buy it and i won't even charge ya shipping...LOL!!! :smack: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

The only caveat I've hard lately about Boogies amps is that the QC in the past year has been pretty abysmal. Alot of folks have been dumping them mid-chronic problems. If you're not able to get some sort of warranty out of the deal be sure to find out the date of production and proceed with caution if neccesary.

They're just sweet sounding amps though....

Good luck with the hurricane...

Well....I bought it ! $625.00....thanks to the O/T I made during the last hurricane!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I've been home & playing it for the last 1/2 hour & HOLY CRAPPOLA, the reverb on this thing is AMAZING!!! Sounds fantastic with my Tele, Strat, & Goldtop...

Gotta go now....it's calling me again!!! :32: :32: :32:

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

Hey Guys, just a quick follow up on this beautiful amp. If any of you come across one of these, buy it! I guess I was expecting something different by something from Mesa-Boogie with "Dual Rectifier" silkscreened on the front. But this is not the Mesa you might love or hate!

The 15w from the 6V6s are super smooth & warm ala Fender, the 30w from the EL84s are a little brighter, yet still warm at lower volumes, nice & punchy cranked ala Vox. The combined "Progressive Linkage" @ 38w gives you the best of both tubes with even, equal doses of lows/mids/highs.

The reverb is just amazing, think Fender + 2...original 4x10 Jensen alnicos seem to handle lower volumes-higher volumes equally with nice break up .

Sorry, just happy with my new toy. It's nice to stumble on something stock & feel it doesn't need immediate upgrades.............I'll have to take a picture of my "Wall of Sound" when I get it arranged & the guitars hung above them.

Again, if you guys come across one of these, do yourselves a favor & atleast try it out!

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

Glad you like it. A p90 goldtop and a blue angel would be a match made in heaven. What cosmetics?

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

YUP....I've got a few Teles & Strats, but the Goldtop is the one I keep playing with it.

It's black with a wheat cane-like grille...there was a tear somewhere along the line & the owner tried to repair it. Not done well, but it really doesn't bother me...a couple of little nicks in the VERY THIN leather-like covering, but it just gives it character.

Thanks for the responses by the way....you're one of the ones who atleast made me wanna go take a look at it in the 1st place!!! :beerchug:

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

My blue angel is dark blue leather with black grille- from 94, i think.

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

Does it have distortion? I know mine doesn't but I have this amp and love it. Thanks to this thread, I finally know what the Progressive Linkage does. The reverb is great on it. I may need new tubes for it but I love it.

Re: MESA BOOGIE BLUE ANGEL 4x10

no master volume, so the only distortion is from turning it up. try the 6v6's on about 3-4, (its LOUD!)- the coolest most dynamic distortion from any boogie product. yum.
