Mesa/Boogie Electra Dyne

Does anyone have opinions/reviews/insights into this amp from Mesa/Boogie?

I have a college buddy of mine that is looking to trade his 1x12 Electra Dyne combo for my Super Reverb Reissue. I'm fairly sure I'm going to make the trade but was hoping someone would be able to give me more insight than the youtube videos I found. Thanks!

Re: Mesa/Boogie Electra Dyne

I heard it on Jay Leno and liked it a lot :) See better than youtube.

Just go for the Shiva.

Not to take anything away from the Electradyne - it's a fine amp - but I bet you'll still end up wanting the Shiva.

I have no doubt I'll still want the Shiva, problem is I can't afford a Shiva right now. The Electra Dyne I can swing since it's a straight across trade.

Re: Mesa/Boogie Electra Dyne

I love the Electra Dyne. It's definitely Mesa's sleeper hit. My band's rhythm guitarist had one as his main amp (head on Mesa 2x12). I've also played through the combo.

It takes a bit of work to get all three channels to the same volume, but it's not impossible by any means.

For such a simple amp it's surprisingly versatile, and pumps out as much gain as you'd expect from a Mesa. Clean is gorgeous, and both drive channels are warm and harmonically rich.

Compared to Mesa's other amps, it has more in common with the Mark series than the Rectos, but it definitely doesn't sound like a Mark V - it's more airy and open, and not as harmonically dense. Don't expect a scooped Recto tone from it either. It's really it's own thing in the Mesa universe.

I love boogies, you'll get a great clean tone out of it, and the gain channels will make it much more versatile than the super reverb.

Oddly, I've always felt mine had more in common with my Recto than my Mark.

To me it retains a lot of the feel of a Recto (big sounding amp with a bit of sag to it) but it excels at the overdriven tones that lay between clean and high gain in a way that the Recto has never achieved.

In addition, the Electra Dyne is one of the few Mesa amps where You can really overdrive the piss out of the power section and get a usable crunch in return.
