Mesa Boogie Express - advice please

Apologies if this topic has been raised before, but I have the following simple questions regarding the Mesa Boogie Express 5:25, which I am on the verge of buying:

1. Is it loud enough for small club/pub gigs?

2. Does the extension cabinet allow more volume / clean headroom?

3. Is it loud enough to comfortably compete with a drummer?

Many thanks,

Mike.

Re: Mesa Boogie Express - advice please

i think the answer is gonna be yes to all of these questions ...

i played a 10" combo and didnt like it's 'boxiness' ... just sounded like it was trying too hard and couldnt quite be open/big enough ... i have not yet played the new 1x12" combo to see if that was resolved with the bigger speaker or not ...

i am not sure how to answer the 'headroom' question .. i dont think it can really give more headroom, per se ... but yeah, it will be moving some more air with the ext cab

unless your drummer is a really massive pounder, it should keep up just fine ... heck, my 15w blues jr kept up with the other 5 folks in my band .. .and a mesa is always gonna be louder than that

Re: Mesa Boogie Express - advice please

1. Yes
2a. Apparent volume, yes
2b. Clean headroom, no
3. Probably

In other words, I agree with T4D in other words.

Tone, Lazarus - many thanks for your replies, most helpful. I'm going to buy it on Tuesday when the redundancy check clears. Then I'm off to the pub to celebrate, then I'm going to look for a job. Priorities firmly in order...!!

Cheers,

Mike.

I played the 5:25 1x12 today and was very impressed. I tried the 1x10 before and I disliked the tones I got out of it, as mentioned before. I believe the 1x12 helps a lot, because it sounded really burning when I played it today!

I understand your priorities completely, Mike.
Enjoy your new amp.

Re: Mesa Boogie Express - advice please

I tried hard to like Mesa amps and I do in a way. They are built great and sound good clean. They seem to excel at the mid scoop thing. But I don't get along with the distortion. So about the 5:25, it's a good amp. Definitely loud enough for most situations. I demoed it and the 5:50. I didn't like the 5:50 overdrie at all. 5:25 sounds better. Especially when cranked. The 5:50 sounded farty and thin. They could have done better on that amp.

The 5:25 is a great overall amp. Personally I like the Koch Studiotone a lot more. It is a little more expensive but worth it.
