Mesa Boogie Fillmore 25 vs. 50

Interesting that the 50W on the crunchier setting at about 2:00 is exactly what I didn't like about it. That more muffled, bassier, squishy sound that I couldn't dial out. Same with the high gain setting. Amazing that the 25W version is only a couple of hundred cheaper than its big brother. The 25W head sounds great.

it doesnt surprise me all that much that the 25w isnt much less. 6l6 vs 6v6 makes a noticeable tonal difference too

Just watched this and I agree, the difference was significant. Not in the market but I'd definitely seek them out to play in person to see what I liked better. I saw a demo of the 50 watter alone and thought it sounded great with a LP with P90's but I think he was in high gain setting. Not generally where I live these days. They look like cool amps.

I tested the Fillmore 50W Combo fully intending on going home with it. The clean channel was pristine and VERY touch sensitive. It was amazing. With a little bit of gain on the clean channel, I was able to get a nice growling blues tone. But that was it.The two more gainy channels did not do it for me at all. They were too spongy, and no matter what I did, I could not dial it out. I couldn't justify the cost for a clean channel alone and something I could get, tone wise, with a TS-9 in front of it.

I understood that you already played through the 50 watter and didn't favor it. Was just making the point that I would have to do the same before passing judgement.

I would think the hot set-up would be the Fillmore 25 with a Mesa V30, on top of the 112 Thiele cab with the C90.

I really don't need another amp, but those 6V6s are SO tempting!

My conclusion after watching that is that I should buy both amps and play them at the same time.

I really prefer the 50, the 25 just sounds more harsh to my ear. The 25 will cut more in a mix, but I'm not concerned about that.
