Mesa Boogie Import Europe

Hi guys

I'm considering shipping a mesa boogie dual rectifier III from america to germany.

I have my doubts with the electricity. The american user manual says:
117 V~ 1 AMP 60 HZ.

and I need 230V / 50 HZ

Has anybody done it before? Can you simply replace the power supply?

Thanks for your help guys.

Re: Mesa Boogie Import Europe

The models intended for export to countries with 230V power have a different power transformer that's wound correctly to work with 230V power. The rest of the power supply circuit is the same except bias portion (two resistors), at least in the old 2 channel models. In theory, it should be a fairly simple mod: Disconnect and remove the US spec power transformer, install and connect the EU spec transformer, and change the bias resistors. In reality, you'd also want to have a schematic on hand so as to avoid surprises when doing the mod. If you're not comfortable making such a change yourself, you'd want to enlist the help of an technician as well.

However, while it may be a simple mod on paper, it isn't going to be an especially cheap one. The power transformer is going to be one of the most expensive parts in the amp. It's also a heavy beast. When you total up the price that Mesa's going to want for the part, the cost of shipping, import duties, taxes, labor fees from the technician etc, it may very well be less expensive to buy a step-down transformer that will take 230V from the wall and convert it to 117 that the amp can run on.

My recommendation is to simply buy a step-down transformer, and use that instead. Just be sure the step-down transformer is rated for the current that the amp will draw, which is at least 4A at 117V, not 1A, per the schematic. 1A at 117V is 117W. The Dual is rated to put out 100W of power. 100W of output power from the amp will require *more* than 100W of input power from the wall, due to the inefficient nature of vacuum tubes.

I've been using a step down transformer for years. No problem, it's rated 500W. It's not a big deal to me but some people might think that would be a burden to carry around. It is kinda heavy.
A good tech could get a good transformer build in your amp cheaper than when you get it from mesa but dont expect it to be a cost effective move.

My Mark III has a different transformer with a switch for different voltages, I'm sure they did something similar for the export DR/TR.

Really? Which MKIII version do you have? I have a blue stripe and there is no way to just switch the voltage. On the panel it has different voltages and you can see someone blacked them out with a sharpie. I was always under the impression that Mesas were shipped with a transformer that was either 120 or 240 not switchable. Maybe its something they changed dunno.

I vote for just getting a step down transformer also. To me its not much of an issue and if you ever come back stateside you dont have to unmod your amp.

Re: Mesa Boogie Import Europe

Every person I've seen playing an imported amp (usually a marshall stack) has been using a stepdown. Seems the easiest (and probably best) way to go.

Re: Mesa Boogie Import Europe

Allright, but you have to carry always a big stepdown - it sucks because we tour a lot.

when I return with my band to the states (hell yeah!) we will rent a backline because its way to expensive to ship everything from europe to the states...

I decided not to buy the amp in america but to save my money for an european model.
