Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

I played through a Special briefly one day. But I was really testing an axe, and needed an EL84 amp for the testdrive. I was quite impressed with it. It did NOT have the limited range of the typical Boogie amp. Seemed quite versatile.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

I like the special. Not as much as my Blue Angel, but it's a more flexible amp.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

Lone Star Classic is all right in my book and that's after owning a Dual, Single Rectifier and a Mark IV.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

The Lonestar Special gets a big two thumbs up from me. One of my favorite Mesas and an actually really good clean channel :fing2:

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

Liked the Special a lot when I tried it out.....didn't care for the Classic though.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

I tested a 4x10 at the LA Amp Show when they were fairly new.

very nice amp

I'm the opposite, I didn't care for the Lone Star Special, but I enjoyed the Classic. I guess I'm more of a 6L6 guy now anyway...

The tubes definitely have something to do with it....I'm an EL84 guy :bigok:

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

Rather than the 212 version, I would suggest the 112 with a matching 112 extension cab. I've seen these--its a beautiful rig, It's a lot more versatile--there are times when you won't need to carry that heavy 212. Set the combo on top of the 112 cab for a nice little mini-stack; or just carry the combo to an informal jam. This how I use my Mark III and my Mark IV.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

I'll put in another big :fing2: for the Special. Loved it's versatility on the power settings and the bass worked like a JTM45. Tight rock when you lowered it and beautiful swampy goodness if you brought it up. If I can get enough scratch together it's my next amp....and this is from a long time Boogie naysayer and Marshall lover.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

sweet man...im a marshall lover too haha...Im trying to sell mine though to get the mesa. thanks again.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

Ha! I should be selling my Marshall today. Unfortunately I have to wait to buy aother amp as I need this cash to pay for a new Gibson.

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

It does depend on how and where you are going to be using the amp. If it is just for home use and recording i would get the special hands down. But if are going to be playing medium to large venues, especially if clean headroom is important for you, get the regular one. Either is a great sounding amp, but if you do decide on the regular one, make sure it is an '07 because they added an extra wattage selection so now you can switch between 100, 50, and 10 watts per channel!

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

search for my lonestar thread, i think there was some feedback there

sweet pick! I want one too

Re: Mesa Boogie Lonestar/Lonestar Special

I'd go lonestar special (i think 30 watts class a is loud enough and you usually get amps miked at big gigs + u can get an extension cabinet if needed). But thats me I like the voxy type clean on the edge of breakup sound which the special has (at loud volumes of course) but if you want crystal fender clean the standard is probably better.
