Mesa Boogie vertical 2x12 half open/closed back cab?

Re: Mesa Boogie vertical 2x12 half open/closed back cab?

Thanks! I'll keep the V30s in a Recto vert 212 when I get my Mark V next month.
I have to admit, I have heard the new Bogner 20th Shivas through V30 Bog cabs and they are great. I have also heard the Mark V through a stock Recto 412 and the tone was jaw dropping. I played it though the same cab briefly.

I really like the Recto 4x12s, and I'd probably really like the V30 Bogner cabs based on the descriptions I've read of them.

What about older British made V30s compared to new?

Mesa's V30s are still made in England.

A studio head friend I have says for recording in the studio, they tend to prefer the WGS Vet 30s over the V30s.....but I have not done a direct comparison. I do have the WGS Vet30/ET65 set in my Bogner 212 and love it!

I haven't tried the WGS version. I'll try it if I happen across it, but at this point I'm pretty satisfied with the results and don't want to fork out that kind of cash on an experiment.

When I was debating on going back to a Recto cab (I switched to Orange 4x12s back in 2006) I did a bunch of research as I was debating between the Recto 4x12 and Stiletto 4x12. What swung me was commentary on recording forums, which included all kinds of info that guitar forums don't really cover. On those forums the preference was for the oversized 4x12 (slant, not straight). I realized that most people (myself included) tended to listen to the boom that you get up close and judge the cab that way, but when I started standing 20 to 40 feet back and listening to the actual speakers it the thing has an outstanding midrange with a lot of clarity.

Thanks! How does Mesa acquire the old British made V30s or is there still a British factory? I guess Celestion still makes some in Europe, like the Heritage line?

So if I buy a stock, even used Rectifier 212...it will have English V30s? Thanks man, didn't know that.

What has outstanding midrange with a lot of clarity??? The Mesa Recto 412 slant?
I really don't need a 412 so I would get the Mesa 212 vert.
Unless I get a smaller 412 like the Marshall 1960 a or B. I just hate lugging around a 412. Trying to fit it into my trunk and the added weight. I don't need one for the small clubs and bars we play.

There's still a factory. Celestion does custom spec speakers for a number of OEMs... Mesa's MC90s and V30s both not being off the shelf speakers.

Yes.

The Recto 4x12 slant. The Recto 2x12 sounds/feels very similar, just with slightly less midrange than the 4x12. Still, it sounds great, particularly if you can get far enough out front of it (sounds a little scooped up close). With my band I've been using my Mark V into a Recto 2x12 and I've gotten nothing but compliments from them.

Re: Mesa Boogie vertical 2x12 half open/closed back cab?

Thanks man.

I am trying to decide on another 212 or a 412. I have the oversized Bogner 212 and compact but big sounding THD 212....but is it just me or do 412s sound smoother?

If so, I can't fit a Recto 412 into my trunk I don't believe so...........maybe a Marshall 1960A or 1960B. I know they are wider and taller than my Bogner 212 but hell they are almost the same weight! Marshall 412 is only about 10 lbs heavier but its the overall dimensions of a 412 that make it more a pain to move around.

I never noticed a difference in smoothness, but it's not something I've specifically listened for. It would make sense in a way as a 4x12 has more phase modulation/comb filtering or whatever they call it going on from the two extra speakers.

On that note, give me a bit and I'll have an answer.

I just know in the past owning 412s......my tones especially leads were smoother and easier to play...less fighting and more forgiving.

I might skip the Recto 212 and find a portable 412 if it exists! LOL.

Surprisingly, the 2x12* is smoother.

The 4x12 is a bit brighter and more in your face in terms of midrange. The 2x12 is a little more laid back and slightly 'fatter' sounding.

* Horizontal 2x12 as I don't have a vertical one.

Wow, how about that!:1:

Never would have thought it. I have had a desire for a 412 again but not lugging one around any longer. Maybe I will take a chance with the vertical Recto 212 with V12s! I am afraid the horizontal will be too close to the ground and hard to hear on stage....unless the stage was up high! The Vert cab is actually larger than the Horizontal overall.

I have gotten used to 212s lately.

Maybe someday I'll get a Marshall 412 and Greenbacks. :)

Re: Mesa Boogie vertical 2x12 half open/closed back cab?

I have two 2x12 Mesa 80's cabs -- one has a panel for the normally open upper portion -- the bottom should have EVM 12L's but in some cases you see C90's ... I got this after using Mesa's 80's 1x12 open back for years but when I needed more chuga, palm mute, etc. and could not fit a 4x12 in my car, I got one of these and fet it was a good solution -- they are built extremely well.

The upper portion has seem V30's, G12-65's, C-90's and BT-80s -- still not sure what will be best up there, maybe the ASW peacemaker .... I also, change out the input jack for a 4-jack panel version, to split the upper and lower sections, etc.

I do agree with other posters that the Mesa thiele alone is an acquired taste -- but in this cab the combo works.... fwiw, imho, ymmv..

I remember my 2x12 having a big sound. I used it for a lot of rock and metal. (Fall out boy - slipknot). I enjoyed it.
