Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

Re: Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

My favorite is whichever works better for the sound I'm looking for at the time. I can't pick between the two because they're both good at different things.

In general I'd pick JCM 800 or older Marshalls.

Re: Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

well this is a classic debate. Marshall is less processed to me and more raw in my opinion. But it depends what your looking for i guess. Id go with any marshall except for the newer ones that arnt tube.

Re: Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

They're soooo different. I want both! :D I've modded my Classic 30 so the gain channel vaguely resembles a Marshall, but I'd love a little tube combo that can get that british crunch(I'm not sure which one that'd be).

Im the other way round, but over here Mesa's r stupidly expensive!
Dude over here everything is expensive unless you buy second-hand from the states, even then you can only really get light stuff like guitars but anything more and shipping is virtually impossible then theres the customs issue, i've never got caught out there before cos i've only bought stuff like pickups and pedals and stuff from forum members..

unfortunatly i've never played any of these but the modern marshalls.. DSls the best of the Modern Marshalls..

Re: Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

Know wat you mean y2stevo, but if you oreder from germany (thomann or musicstore) you can really get some good bargains, and I also happen to know that there's a couple of mesa and old marshall owners around the dublin area (couldn't tell you who but I've talked to some of them) that would be happy to let you try them out before you buy over the net, I've done it many a time.

Re: Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

Well i live in cnanada so both marshalla nd emsa gear costs about the same actually marshall can get a ltitle mroe pricy. At first i really liekd mesa but lately im all about the marshalls. I think it greatly depends on what tone you wnat. If you wnat crushing distrotion go with mesa. I dont use thatmuch distortion anymore so i guess i'd take the marshall. Im considering by new buy whihc will be a new marshall amp once summer comes around. possible either a marshall AVT or a dsl401. Im leaning towards the dsl, i want tubes. I find alot professional bands only strat using mesa gear once they are endorsed by them. But dont get me worn gi love mesa i'd use either one you can get great tone from either.

Re: Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

For high gain, Mesa, cleaner sound. JCM 2000 Marshalls have a great tone, but in order to get a good high gain sound, it has been my experience that I have to sacrifice clarity for it. Mesa, both the Rectifier (if you're sensible about the amount of gain you use) and the Mark IV, has a more transparent tone. The voicing is less liquid, this also means you hear more of your mistakes and you have to work a little harder. I'm fine with that. Older amps; I like the Jubilee series JMP Master Vol, and PLexi. Classic tones, great for their intented purpose. So, I guess I'm saying that I like both.

Re: Mesa/Boogie vs Marshall

I owned a Mark I...sold it as fast as I could!

I hate the way Boogies sound...honky overdrive, artificial sounding and buzzy with that weird extra little note riding along on top of the main signal. Bugs me.

Don't much care for some of the stuff Randall Smith pulls either: like patenting commen place and pre-existing circuitry and designs he'll never use just so he can sue anyone who DOES try to use them.

I love a good Marshall...very natural, crunchy and vocal sounding. Real men just turn it up and let it rip. (LOL!)

Hey Dimebag you're the first person from ireland ive seen on the forums, cool...

Thanks for the offer but right now i'm more than happy with my DSL50 and i don't think i'll be lookin for a new amp (of that price anyway) for a good while anyway....

And yeh thomann and musicstore.de seem pretty reasonably priced and shipping anywhere in europe is only like €25 ,
But the best value for higher priced stuff (like over 250-400+)is www.gak.co.uk
I know its £'s but it worker out My DSL was i think like €200 cheaper than anywhere else....
