My jcm 2000 dsl 201 sounds fine for lead stuff but chords are waaay to mushy sounding.
I'm toying with getting a mesa combo.
Question: Is there a pedal that will work to fix the mushy marshall? What mesa combo would do classic to metal, I have a z brake that the neighbors like but sucks a little tone IMO.
I play only at home and can't crank anything but I want clean rank distortion for power cords and melting leads (who don't).
I want to hear each note on those power cords and melting leads to sound freaking musical as hell to be redundant.

Any knowledge here would be appreciated.

Pretty much any of them that isn't a Rectifier.

I'd suggest the Lone Star, Stiletto, and F-series myself.

The Lone Star Special has some cool options (including a 5w low power mode), but you'll have to see if you like it's sound first.

Re: Mesa boogie

Get a Fulltone OCD or Banzai Fireball to use with your Marshall. Retube the Marshall with JJ power tubes and Shuguang 9th Generation 12AX7's, all of which you can find cheap on Ebay.

Re: Mesa boogie

Thanks, on second thought though my dsl is so close to what I want I am going to save a trip to the bank and mess with a few pedals see what I can do.

Re: Mesa boogie

I just bought those jj's and shuguang's I'll let ya know how it sounds.
Thanks for the advice. I need to experience those tubes heard so much about them.

YUP, those are the 3 i wanted to mention , also IN THAT VERY SAME ORDER !

Re: Mesa boogie

I've got a recto.. It does balls-to-the-walls very well.
I also actually like the clean tones in it too...

Anything between clean and balls-to-the-walls it doesnt really do too well. But with some pedals you can make it good.

Re: Mesa boogie

I would try the less-gain/little more volume approach...you'd be surprised how little distortion it takes to get a heavy tone.

Re: Mesa boogie

I just bought a BBE sonic maximizer after reading all the reviews.
Hope its made with soap for my marshall mud.
I'll drop a line and tell if its on e-bay already.

But hell, 95 plus percent swear by em so what the hey.

good advice Joneser, tubes and speakers and speaker cab size can make a huge differance and can account for as much as 70% of a tone change. That Marshall should be able to perform better with a few little tube mods and the right speaker and speaker cab configeration. Good luck and let us all know what happens.

Re: Mesa boogie

I know a guy with a Marshall set for sort of dirty & uses a Mesa V-Twin to get a non-Marshall-like stupid gain. Maybe the Duncan SFX-03 would work for you!

Re: Mesa boogie

Thanks for the advice all. The tubes and stuff should come in in a few days.
One more question. My current speaker in the dsl 201 is a celestion G12e-50
what would be good upgrade?

Re: Mesa boogie

vintage 30 is still my Fav. but my amp, pickups, and speaker cabs are configured for this speaker. I like a low midrange punchy sound. Good luck.
