Re: Mesa F-50 ?
Had one (combo)
GREAT amp. By far the most touch sensitive and dynamic amp I've played.
Clean channel, IMO is it's biggest strength, and again IMO, it's the best clean channel I've ever played. Its not quite as sparkly as a twin, but does the bassman/JTM stuff incredibly well. Crank the gain and it will do a cool early Aerosmith type tone
Gain channel...without contour is not my thing too much...it's more MKI MESA than say MKIIC/MKIII. Still nice, but that dark MESA type santana tone (with alot of gain on tap)
With contour kicked in, it cuts some mids, and adds some bass/treble. By pushing the mid control and backing off the gain you can get some cool 800 series marshall type sounds...not exactly like a marshall, but a decent approximation...a little darker, a little less sparkly on top. Push the gain and it will do a decent MKIII approimation and the nu-metal stuff
though it's not as tight or aggressive as a Recto.
It's FREAKING LOUD. Louder than my 1987X was. Not a good bedroom amp:laugh2:
Very versatile...tons of diff tones in it, but ya gotta play with it alot to find them..its not "plug and play", and the controls are VERY sensitive and interdependent. Built like a tank, and IMO very good value for the $.
My biggest problem was the reg Gain channel. If I did set it up to where I got an acceptable sound (for me), when I hit the contour, it got way too "recto-ish". I think the best way to run it (and how I would run the F30 if I end up with one, as its on my GAS list) would be to tweak your gain sound with the contour on, and then use a pedal as a goose for leads.
