Mesa Maverick Combo

25's Nemesis
Anyone have any experience with this thing. I was lurking on ebay and saw clean examples going for $800 and less. I know they aren't as heavy sounding as dual or triple recto's, but I don't know the voicing on these amps. Also, how loud would the 35watt Class A 4x10 version be? Loud enough to play witrh drums, bass, and another guitarist? Thanks a lot for the info.

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

oh yes, plenty loud for gigging. i think they are really cool amps, not high gain, but this and the blue angel are the only mesa id consider buying.
the rhythm channel is good for clean and old school cranked kinda dirty tone. the lead channel has more compression and gain and has a good sound to it.

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

Thanks Jeremy. Which would you preffer, the 2x12 or the 4x10? BTW, how is the clean headroom on this amp? Is it about the same as a BF or Tweed Bassman? Again, thanks for the info. :burnout:

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

i gotta say, if you want clean, get the Blue Angel. There is no gain channel but this thing loves pedals. the clean is warmer and smoother than fender with drippier reverb as well.

from harmony central:
An all tube, class A 1X12 (or 4x10) combo. This amp uses a pair of 6V6s' and/or 4 EL84s' for power. A knob ( named Progressive Linkage ) on the front panel allows you to select power tube types or combine them. The pair 6V6s' are rated 15 watts, with the quartet of EL84s' it's 33 watts, or combine them for 38 watts. Very very cool indeed. The preamp is all 12AX7s with both a solid state and tube ( GZ34 ) rectifier, hence the name Dual Rectifier. Controls are Volume,Treb, Mid, Bass, and Reverb. As well as the "Progressive Linkage". Two inputs, number 2 seems padded down a few dbs. There is also a Bright/Fat toggle. In the back there a variety of speaker outs for different ohm matching. An effects loop, Slave out, and Fuse round out the rear panel. No channel switching, graphic EQ, or master volume.

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

I've played around a lot on Mavericks and they're awesome! Sweet clean and slightly rude but still sweet crunchy tones and lud enough for most gigs. I especially like that smooth elastic feeling that the amp gets... its as if notes jump off the guitar as opposed to you ahving to fight it and the amp feeling really stiff.

By God that's high tech!! :saeek: Which one stay cleaner longer though, the Maverick, or the Blue Angel?

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

I've only played the 1x12 maverick, but it didn't impress me as much as the blue angel. I could have played a turkey, though.

Thoroughly recommend the blue angel, which is similar, but has better reverb and purer tone due to the simpler circuit. The BA is the closest mesa has come to a boutique amp since the original handwired mk1s.

Clean headroom on either the BA or maverick won't be as great as a bassman ri or a blackface twin ri. Should be fine for smaller clubs, though.

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

Headroom isn't as good as a Bassman? Darn! :banghead:

Back to the drawing board, I guess.

What about the Heartbreaker 2x12" combo? I know it's switchable between 100 and 60 watts, so the headroom must be there. How are the OD's? I don't want Rectumfryer style gain. More of a warm, low gain grind actually. Thanks a lot, gentlemen. :burnout:

I still like the Maverick/Blue Angel concept, I just wish it was made with a bit more power. :yell:

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

You and me both, Benjy.

I'm not a fan of the heartbreaker. Cludgy sounding gain.

Maybe a s/h THD flexi would be the way to go. 50 watts, any tube config you want. Killer mid gain tones.

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

Clean headroom is there, on the BA until you get to about 4 or 5..and this is loud!!! I use mine with my loud drummer all the time, on about 3-4...you'd never know it was 18 watts..

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

I played a 2x12 version with a nice strat and it had pretty ok headroom and only crunched up lightly on the clean channel when pushed. Using a Les Paul yeilded more crunch but turning the amp gain and volume helped. Still a ncie sweet breakup tone though.

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

OK, now I have to try them both! Thanks for the info guys.

Hot Grits, do you know if the Flexi is a dual channel amp? I'm intrigued by the concept of this one too. If it's anything like THD's other amps, it must be killer! :burnout:

Re: Mesa Maverick Combo

yes, the flexi is a single channel.

the maverick has about as much clean headroom as my bassman but alot of it depends on tubes. when i got my bassman it had too much headroom, ive swapped things around so that i can now get it to break up where i want it or close anyway. i like the blue angels very much as well but the maverick has a foot switchable 2nd channnel. thats nice for playing live. with the recto switch, overall master volume and a good set of tubes you should be able to get plenty of clean volume
