Mesa Quad preamp

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

******n, sounds like a Mark to me! Smooth midgrange, nice grind, badass!

Gat/poweramp/cab/mic/pre? I'd try making it a bit mroe present and in your face if at all possible.

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

The in-yer-face comes from the extra 100db you can turn it up because the upper mids are so smooth. Muhahahahaaaaaaa.

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

Dude, I don't know if I could handle any more of it in my face  I'm frightened enough by it as-is!

LP Studio (EMG 81 bridge, didn't use the 85 in the neck) -> Quad -> Carvin TS100 -> 1960A -> SM 57 and i5 on a Vintage 30 -> Studio Projects VTB1's

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

By in your face I mean more present in the high end - right now it sounds a bit muffled up top.

Also, what've you got them panned to? It sounds like 80% or so - try out 100%, should sound more broad and less squashed into the center.

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

It's a very recent purchase, so I'm still trying to figure out how to dial it in and mic it up.

Sounds great as it is. Have you tried running two channels at once yet? It's a blast! Even for that tone you're running right now, you can add the Rhythm 2 channel to it and the attack of your picking will come through like a fist. Then you can adjust the master volume of your Lead channel to balance it against the Rhythm channel. Rhythm 2 will overdrive quite alot if you turn the gain up (volume knob on the left)

You can also run both Lead channels at once. I like to run one with the Graphic EQ on (typical Boogie "Vee") and the other EQ bypassed. Then I can also alternate the two channels, like one bright pulled, one not, one deep pulled, one not, etc. That preamp is a blast, and the tones never stop coming. You can cook up almost anything in there, and I think because of all the full-sized components, it possibly "out-muscles" the Triaxis.

My basic statement about the Quad is that it's easier to get the Mark sound when used with various power amps like your Carvin. The Triaxis seems to be missing something, and it's like it NEEDS the Mesa power amps to complete the sound. You've definitely pulled off a MKIII/MKIV sound there, without the 2:90.

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

Well! I have tried none of those yet! Guess I have quite a bit of knob turning yet to do...

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

This sounds f'ing awesome, bro! Very big sound with the guitars panned hard L/R. Did you put together the backing track yourself as well?

- Keith

Re: Mesa Quad preamp

Thanks, man! Yes, indeed I did construct the backing. I did guitars first, then bass, then threw together a midi for drums and used that for DFH.
