Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

Hey guys, I'm lookin' at getting one of the Mesa/Boogie Rectifiers soon but I'm having trouble deciding between the Dual and the Triple. I'm looking for a tone like Arch Enemy's from their album Doomsday Machine, or Chimaira's tone from their song Power Trip, or even like some of the songs from the new metal cartoon Death Clock Metalocalypse for those of you that have seen that:fing2:. Heavy but tight and defined! So between the Dual Recto and the Triple Recto, which one would you guys suggest? I haven't been able to test any of them because nobody carries them around here.:smack:

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

I've only been fortunate to play thru a Dual-Rec. I have no x-perience w/ the 3X-Recto. For my needs, the D.R. has plenty-o-swat, nice tight rhythms, and plenty-o-gain on tap to do Arch Enemy-type stuff. But hearing is believing, so try to go out and try both.

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

if you're a fan of the cranked tube amp sound, then don't get the triple! because it's going to tough to find anywhere where you can crank 150 watts enough to get the tubes cookin'.

the dual rectifiers are where you want to start looking. all the different settings to choose from, such as the choice of 6L6 or EL34 tubes, or the tube vs. solid state rectification, or the ability to yank two tubes and run at 50 watts, makes it an extremely versitile amp. if you want a tighter, more articulate lead channel, look no further than the older two-channel model if 3 channels aren't a necessity.

if cleans are a big factor then check out a series II single rectifier. surprisingly good cleans out of that amp, and it still delivers the famous distorted tones that the rectifiers are known for. don't let the power rating fool you; 50 watts of tube power will cover everything you'll need it to do, unless you're playing stadiums and have a wall of 4x12's behind you!

dude if you gig is cool, but i had a rectifier half stack in my room, that was the stupidest buy ever! go with a small tube combo!

another good point. don't shell out the cash for a 50+ watt head if you're not in a gigging band!

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

Honestly dude, you're looking for more of a 5150 tone.

Chimaira's albums have been 100% 5150 so far, and that Doomsday Machine was a Dual Racktifier (yes, Racktifier) and a Krank Rev.1, each through it's respective cabinet.

That said, Arch Enemy's tones are better represented by a 5150, IMO.

If you're going to put the amp in your room, definitely don't go for a Rectifier. If it's in the garage or a place you can crank it up, go for it though.

If you're dead set on a Rectifier, I'd personally search out a 2 channel Dual, or a Single.

Thanks, that's an awesome point! I don't really give a crap about cleans too much, and I'm mostly a rhythm player so I'm also not focusing on leads for soloing or anything either. But I want a nice fat but tight distorted rhythm tone! I will look into the Dual then, thank you. :)

Kewl thanks, I was also looking at the 5150 but they don't make it anymore, right? I know there's the new 6505, but how does that compare to the 5150?

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

Doh, that's right! Never thought about Ebay lol. Yeah and after just watching a couple of WithFullDistortion's youtube clips riffing on the 5150 I'm starting to dig it! Plus it's cheaper than a Mesa!

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

I'd get it on eBay, but I'd probably get a 6505 on eBay.

The amps are, in every way, shape, and form aside from logo's, identical. Seriously.

That said, there's a guy on the Sevenstring.org forums selling a blockletter head for 450+shipping, the dude's insane!

I prefer it to the Mesa, and I owned a Single Recto... I still want another to layer with the 5150, but the 5150 is my favorite amp, by far.

My friend Matt Smith in Theocracy just did this completely raw 5150 clip the other day, sounds great to me!

Yeah man! That's the kind of tone I'm talkin' about, and I bet the distortion wasn't even totally cranked for that clip. See I always used to think that the 5150 would only give you an Eddie Van Halen tone, or just an 80's shredder tone for that matter. But I was wrong, and I think I might have found my amp!

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

That was with the gain on about 3. :laugh2:

It's definitely a badass tone, for sure. I'll never sell mine (again)!

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

I played the Road King and Roadster which are dual rectifiers. They're both awesome, but the Roadster is a little easier to use. Excellent versatilty. I could easily play any style on those amps.

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

Lol. Well hey thank you guys for the help tonight. Keep it metal!:wizard:

Re: Mesa Rectifier question (Dual or Triple?)

Oh and something I wanted to add. It's a guitar duel between two guys, but one is using a Rectifier and the other is using a 5150. The Recto's tone smokes the 5150 in this clip, but maybe it's just because the 5150 kid doesn't know how to properly EQ it?

if you like metal and hard rock and those are your styles (above) then get the dual recto and don't look back; you'll be happy with it like butter on toast
