Mesa SOB?

Hot _Grits

Hi all,

anyone had any experience with these? -a friend is looking at buying one.

Looks like a modded mk1 or mk2 to me. Is that the case? Does anyone know the tonal and functional differences/similarities?

Re: Mesa SOB?

its a 60w mark I type of amp, a friend of mine has one and its not bad at all. it does the mesa mark series thing pretty well. there is a limit control, not sure what that does

Re: Mesa SOB?

It's not a modded MkI or II, it's the first "reissue" of the Mk I. the new Mk I reissues are better. Try before you buy.

Re: Mesa SOB?

For some reason more than a few people have told me personally that it's the worst amp they ever owned. Sorry to be negative, but when multiple people say something so strong I feel the need to share it to help warn any wouldbe buyers.

Re: Mesa SOB?

The SOB is a very good amp, but I don't think of it as an "everyman's" amp.

Don't think of this amp as a channel-switcher--you WILL be disappointed.

I think it is a very good recording amp; where you can tink with it to get a tone--record it--and then move on to the next track, the next tone. There are lots of good tones in these amps for this type of use.

If you really want Boogie tone for live use--a Mark IIC+, Mark III, or Mark IV are better choices.

UNLESS--you have ONE tone, ala Santana--and don't need a multitude of clean/crunch/dirty/screamin' tones.

Good amp.

When used appropriately.

Got it?

Good luck!

Bill

Thanks. I'll tell my friend. TBH mark series amps aren't my thing, I'm a Blue Angel man myself. But all this info may help my bud decide whether he want to take a punt...

Re: Mesa SOB?

a friend of mine has a blue angel 1x12" for sale if that might be more up his alley

ta, but we're both in New Zealand, which should complicate matters enough for the 'too hard basket' to appear. I'm sure he likes my Blue Angel, but they don't turn up cheap enough down here for him to be interested. This SOB is something of a bargain and under half the average s/h blue angel price...
