You can't get that magical tone out of non EL 34 amps.

Magical tone is where you find it. There is no rule and some of the greatest tones we know have been made with all sorts of tubes. And not tubes too!

That said - you be you and love what you love. Rock on.

Circuit design and speakers seem to matter much more to the sound than the type of power tubes you're running. My Traynor can run 6L6s or EL34s. The EL34s kick out slightly more power, but through the same speakers the basic amp tone is pretty much the same.

Don't neglect the factor of how they are biased.

Modern Traynor amps, be they YCV20/40/50/80 and YCS50/100 all have an auto-bias circuit. I have owned several YCV40s and a couple YCV50s and I swapped tubes and never tried to manually bias so I'm not sure if it's even possible to. It always sounded good!
