Mesa tone from a Marshall?

Is there a pedal out there that I can use in front of my Marshall TSL602 to get a Mesa sound? I'm thinking heavy liquid distortion type sound I can use for Manson, Metallica, etc...

Thanks,

It depends how toy feel about sub-$100.00 pedals !

If you are a Boutique ssnob, like 90% of the guys over @ HCFXForum, then do not read futher, but if you do not mind a mass-produced working man's product, i might have just the answer for you :

Mesa in a box : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rocktron-Zombie-Rectified-Distortion-Pedal?sku=154236 - or so it says on the tin !!!

Right now, my fav hi-gain unit is the EHX Metal Muff, but it does not try to copy the Mesa tone at all !

Our local Carl Martin GURU might be able to provide some sound clips, but this unit from his Co. is into that whole Rectifier type tone !

At $130.00 it is def. worth trying out !

Re: Mesa tone from a Marshall?

There are really two possible Mesa sounds that you could be referring to. They have a "Modern", which is scooped and works good for "chugging" rhythms. The other is the "vintage", which works best for leads.

Let me say up front that I really don't think you will be able to nail the rectifier sound of a Mesa, no matter what you put in front of the amp. Mesa amps are very uniquely voiced.

My main amp is a Mesa Rectifier Recording Preamp, but I've played through Road Kings and other Mesa Rectifiers. The one thing I've noticed about these amps is that you can keep turning the gain up and you really don't lose definition, unlike most other high gain amps that I've played through.

But to answer your question, here's what I'd try:
- Modern: Cut your mids back to at least 9 o' clock, and keep your highs and lows around 12 o'clock, give or take a little.

- Vintage: Try different Tube Screamers. It's not exact, but the mid boost of the Tube Screamer may get you in the right direction. Experiment with the gain both on the amp and on the pedal to find the right blend.

Re: Mesa tone from a Marshall?

on the boss side of things that Mega Distortion pedal can have a Boogie like sound to it thru some amps.... thru a Traynor's clean channel it sounded almost boogie-ish... But for a boss product it was good..... I bought one but it does not sound as good thru my Peavey Classic series amps.. But thru some amps it really works well....

Re: Mesa tone from a Marshall?

Run the Marshall clean....Mesa V-twin right thru the front of it......

VOILA !!!

I think someone is selling a V-Twin in the Trading Post :bigok:

Oh, and if you can find a Mesa Bottle Rocket, grab that too :D

And no one suggests a boss metal zone?

I know alot of people hate it, but it's pretty much that modern style mesa tone in a box... Not sure exactly what kind of amp it works with best.

It always sounds best to me through something very clean and warm without adding color.

. . . LIKE A BASSMAN LTD ???

Re: Mesa tone from a Marshall?

I have a Metal Zone and a Zombie, and I like both of them. But I still think the Mega Distortion sounds the best. It has 2 tone knobs and 2 cascading drive knobs. Of the drive knobs, one sounds more like overdrive, and the other sounds more like a rock distortion. Mixed together, they get as heavy as the Metal Zone, but it still sounds a lot smoother. Sometimes, I like to play through it with both of the drive knobs all the way down and the volume cranked.

Mesa V-Twin?

I checked out the V twin on Mesa's website. Aside from looking very cool, I'm hoping this will give me the Mesa tone I'm looking for.

Does anyone know how much this pedal will set me back $$?

Thanks!
