Mesa Triple Crown cab choice

Re: Mesa Triple Crown cab choice

A lot of those reasons don't work for me... for one thing I don't sweat resale value. I use gear until it's not really usable anymore. Also, I don't give a squirt what speakers it comes with because there's almost no chance it's the ones I want. One reason I go with bargain basement cabs is that I WILL replace the speakers, which kills the value anyway.

Avatar is always running sales on unloaded cabs that are completely wired and ready. Free shipping also at this moment and every-so-often.
If you're into speaker mixing or you already have your own then Avatar is the way to go. (they're absolutely not cheapo-cabs)

Re: Mesa Triple Crown cab choice

Speakers and design (front/rear load, slant or straight, bracing, material, porting if present) matter
Manufacturer means next to nothing

95% of the time, its just a dang box. That said, most of the remaining 5% cases where design actually matters ARE mesa cabs. They even have some mathematically sound scientifically engineered ones like the MESA Thiele cabs.

Well that's true with brands that make all price-points, from junk to jewels.
Avatar, and of course Mesa (and a select few others) only make top-quality units, so in those cases manufacturer does mean everything.

And as much as I love Mesa,,,,,,,,,that's BS about the thiele; (and I love the thiele and would like to have one with either speaker if I was just wanting to spend)

The reason I say that is because they went from evm12l to mc90 without changing the "scientific formula".
(same cab is custom specified identically for both these vastly different speaker models?,,,,,me thinks not)

Mesa make some of the best cabs period, and they put a lot of effort into matching series cabs with heads. Mesa is the obvious answer to me. If you're spending Ferrari money, don't buy cheapo tires for your new ride.

Ive built a Mesa Thiele clone cab... sounds good.

Afair - its been a while - they meant to say that the dimensions were more mathematically sensible than usual for 12" speakers and guitar frequencies, vs. cabs whose dimensions were just totally random or spec'd to look good with a head unit or something

Plus, from what I've seen in bass amplification where mathematics is more trendy, these things DO matter.

THAT SAID, MOST MESA 2X12 AMD 4X12 CABS ARE *JUST* BOXES. Now yes they do seem to build em a bit sturdier... but you CAN go in with wood, nails and glue and brace up any ol cab yourself. Just make sure it's birch plywood not MDF

Youre gonna be biased.

The cab in your avatar is one of the coolest old Mesa designs ever made... and, afair, sadly discontinued.

These days, basic recto cabs really don't bring anything spectacular to the table. Well, except the british v30s...thats the part that sets them apart from other modern cabs.

It is NOT gonna be $1k better than a used cab loaded with british V30s from another reputable brand.

In fact...its gonna be somewhat less versatile, due to the lack of switchable ohmage.

I had one of those cabs that was built right into the roadcase, wish I still had that one.
