Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

I have a Voodoo Lab Chorus and a Guyatone Delay...anyone know the correct (or close to) settings for this song?

Thanks.

Re: Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

You want a slowish rate and a higher depth on the chorus, there's really no delay on it, just chorus. You could do a little slap on it to fill it out though.

Re: Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

I cover that song with my current band and I try to ballpark the tone but not nail it. I usually use my bridge pickup with a light touch of overdrive, i set my flanger (Ibanez FL9) for a medium rate and a fairly high depth, with medium feedback and delay time. I use a short delay because my amp does not have reverb and I like the spaciousness that it imparts to the tone.

I honestly don't think about numerical settings when dialing in sounds these days. I use my ears and only after I'm done tweaking knobs do I look and see where the settings wound up.

Andy Summers' guitar in that song always sounded like it had a little grit. Not quite clean. But it doesn't sound like amp overdrive. Probably an overdrive pedal.

It always sounds like there's two guitars too. But I can't tell if there's a harmony or if they're playing in unison. It's wierd. Did he double track the part?

RichS is a massive Police fan and could most likely tell you every piece of gear Andy used... when i asked him about that sound a while back he said Summers never used Chorus... he used Flangers a lot...

The reason I posted the question is because I've tried tweaking the chourus pedal every which way, and it never sounds close. Although several people insist he was using one, I have my doubts.

Anyone tried this song with a Phase 90? or flanger?

My Telecaster and Boss CE-2 nail it to the wall. Rate at about 8:00 and depth around 3:00 (I think)

Re: Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

You need a Boss digital dimension of some sort.

That will NAIL the tone.

Otherwise you can get close with a flanger... more of a shimmer then a swirl.

Not a lot of depth... slow rate.

The digital dimension has a really identifiable character... it's all over Peter Gabriel records of the same era. Check out the vox & cymbals on the "shock the monkey"...

They need to reissue those... glad I have one. The Line 6 modulation box has a great emulation... probably the best sound in that pedal.

Wasn't that the one with the 4 silver buttons that activated presets? Those were rad... I tried one out once and loved it.

There's a few different versions out there...

The push button is I think the oldest.

There's a Dimension, Dimension C, Dimension D... rackmounts...

They're all a little different but cut from the same cloth.

With the pushbuttons, you can select more then one at a time for more variations. Different combinations yeild different tones.

Dude, Andy Summers uses Flanger.

There's a video on YouTube.

Correct! It is a little bit driven, and there is a higher harmony part.

Re: Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

Here is a clip of me and my band playing it a few years ago. I apologise for the over the top echo on the vocals, and my less than perfect playing, but I think I got quite a good tone for the song.

PS - The lead singer was not house trained, hence the bad banter at the start of the song!! :D

jimmy's got it right. Andy Summers used an EH Electric Mistress flanger at that point, which is why the Boss and other choruses only get within an approximation of his sound.

Cheers..................................wahwah

Re: Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

My guess is that a Voodoo labs analog chorus would get closer than most chorus pedals as it seems more of a hybrid chorus/ flange maybe even phase sound?

Re: Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

Main component would be a Tele'. No matter what gear i use to play that song, i always go back to a tele, gets the sound better with a tele without effects, then without a tele and with effects.

The Mistress is a shimmery flange... MXR is more throaty... I can buy that! I never paid attention to Summers gear even though I've always dug his style. He played through Marshalls a lot... esp. in the early days.

I still say you can get close or nail it with a Digital Dimension... lol It's somewhere on those records, even if it was only a few sounds in "mix". That... and the reverb!

BTW - Tomorrow night PBS is airing a recent Police concert with interviews & whatnot. At least it's on in metro NY, check your listings...

Re: Message In A Bottle...chorus? delay?

Definately the old Electric Mistress (not a whooshy BOSS or MXR Flanger), Andy did use a dyna comp for a while (I've heard) anyway not sure about it on this song but may be the ticket.
