Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

Gettin Tighter is my favorite Deep Purple song! I was on a road trip a few years back and we didn't have an mp3 jack in the pickup we were cruising in, so I stopped at one of those stanky little gas stations and picked up 4 or 5 bargain cds. Deep Purple greatest hits was one. I heard that song and I was like 'this is deep purple?'. I dig that stuff lol.

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

John Lord said in an intrrview that they knew they had a good rock record with CTTB, but that most fans and critics did not consider it a good Deep Purple album. Im one of those folks. To me CTTB is the warm up gig for what would become the first iterations of Whitesnake. More bluesy, more funky, more bluesy slide guitar solos, etc etc.

Besides that, IMO Tommy Bolin comitted the cardinal sins in the 70s with James Gang and DeepnPurple, as Paul Chapman did in the 1980s, and Jannick Gers did in the 1990s. Total disregard for the brilliant solos and even chord work that his prdecessors did. All three of those guys just would pull.of.some.craptastic wank solo whenever they were doing the classic tunes of their predecessors. Nothing wrong with being your own man, so to speak, but have some respect and pay homage tothose who came before. Doug Aldritch being a perfect example of how to do so when you Re following in the footsteps of giants.

Thats my classic hard rock theory post of the day, kids.

Looks like the Tuner does not fit, but it does fit just fine -- weird camera angle. TU-2 is NOT part of the signal chain.

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

The setup sounded AWESOME last night @ Ultrasound with my Strat and a Bruno Underground 30!

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

Very cool!

If you want a no tone suck tuner and smaller is better the TC Poly Tune is KILLER, true bypass and rock solid in my experience thus far and they have a MINI version now...

It's on my "if I get round to it" list; the TU2 works fine, I just have it out of the signal chain. There are a few things I need to get before another tuner (like a second 1Spot).

My on-again-off-again love affair with Bruno amps has really got me gas'ing for one again ... at this point, I think it's a tie between a Dr Z Prescription Jr and the Underground 30 now.

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

So, the UG 30 I assume that Tony's take on an AC30???
I really have no idea, to tell the truth. I just plug into amps til I find a sound I like and then crank the bejeebus out of it. The UG30 definitely has more grunt and LF push than the Prescription Jr, but the midrange isn't quite as open ...

Ya know, that's something about Dr. Z amps...all of 'em really...they all have the most amazing midrange character ever!!!!

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

I have learned a few things with the "Bolin" setup:

- The BOSS TU-2 is a pretty sizable tone-suck, at least with low output single coils
- I REALLY like my tone when I'm only going through a couple of pedals
- Conventional wisdom is all well and good, but sometimes doing something 'wrong' can be so right. In this case, I am running Echo > fuzz > phase, as Bolin did. By today's wisdom, this is not the 'correct' order, BUT -- it sounds great!

yeh that is an unusual order!
how does it sound fuzz, phase then space echo?
my hartman fuzz would never forgive me for going anywhere but first, but mine's a germanium NKT model so mebbe thats why it wont behave like yours does. Is the bolin a silicon hi gain type thing? I had a superfuzz that didint seem to mind where it was in the chain. Makes life a lot easier!

The Bolin is a clone of the Sam Ash Fuzzz Boxx.

It is Silicon but very low gain...very interesting unit, one of the earliest Si fuzz pedals I know of.

It sounds good, but not as fun!

No, not hi gain at all.

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

Ya'll are making me want to find a delay and put it in front of my dirt boxes lol.

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

That's the way I do it with pedals...

I remember seeing that. It's why I love this place. I have learned a lot about the 'right ways' and then how to throw all that out the window. I've thought about gettin a simple analog delay to mess with it, but just havn't done it yet. Thinking of the aqua puss or an older EH memory man if I could find one at a good price lol.

If you don't need a lot of time or frills the AP MK II is an AMAZING echo unit...I really like mine a lot!

Re: Messin' with the Tommy Bolin setup

Ooooh, man -- so happy with this setup!!!! Had a jam @ Ultra tonight working on a new song. Strat > Bolin rig > Bruno Underground 40 head into a Diezel 4x12. Recorded from about 20 ft away using the Tascam DR-1; a little bit of mic clipping due to the volume.
