ProCo RAT . . . and EHX Metal Muff.

Unlike the name suggests, the Metal Muff, is a GREAT Hard Rock pedal !

Re: Metal and hard rock distortion pedals

I just went through an OD/Distortion pedal testing cycle and have 2 or 3 recommendations. The JHS Angry Charlie ($150-$200) was one of the coolest OD/Distortion pedals I have ever played. It's basically a JCM 800 in a box, but you can back the drive down enough to play more classic rock, etc. and it cleans up nice with the volume knob. I checked out the new JHS Andy Timmons ($175-$215), which is a modded Angry Charlie, and that was even better. I have a great high gain 2-channel amp, so I didn't really have a use for them, but if I was running a high gain pedal platform - or wanted a backup to go direct in case there was an issue live - I'd have these at the top of the list. For a more light-classic rock tone, the XOTIC SL Drive ($100-$120) is pretty badass, as well (and it's a big time space saver on the pedalboard). It has 4 different internal modes, but I'm using the default Super Lead setting now for a blues/classic rock project and I'm "pushing it" with a tubescreamer when I need more gain than what the SL offers. It cleans up nicely with the volume knob and really reacts well to pick attack, etc. Good Luck!

Definitely the ProCo Rat (I think the ProCo Solo is better as it nails the Rat tone plus a whole lot more! :D ) and the Metal Muff is also a great suggestion, especially with the Top Boost! I had one for rock and kept the gain dial backed–great rock tones!
