Metal distortion pedal for me?

Pierre

Stratologist
I like thick mids, tight low end, an organic tone (if you see what I mean)...I need a lot of gain but not OTT. I want little noise and no feedback (er... obviously)... aside from that I'm not too picky. Marshall voiced more so than Boogie or most things else...

The Metal muff was too thin and buzzy for me, really not a great tone... The Boss stuff isn't great save perhaps for the ML2 and that's pretty much everything we have around here. So any suggestions, if possible under 150 USD are welcome! Thanks!

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

I may be mistaken, but didn't you used to own a crunchbox?

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Yep. Building one right now as well. It's not a metal pedal though. The low end is too loose and the voice and overall gain isn't very metal sounding.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

What amplifier are you using it with? Are you planning to use it for all your gain? Or more as a booster or some extra coloration on your amps existing tone? What kinds of metal do you plan to play?

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Only as gain. I only use boosts or ODs as boosts. This would be like adding another channel to my amp which is a Laney VC15 (10'' speaker, plenty of bass). Not a metal amp by any stretch.
I have my modded SD1, Bad Monkey and Plexitone's boost side so that's a bunch of boosts or low gain ODs for coloration hehe... I just need a standalone distortion pedal for a metal sound from a clean tone.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Hm ... MXR dist+ ..... I dont know people either hate them or love them .....

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

The Dist + is far from a distortion pedal dude :s It's a boost, and I really don't like it either. Not a standalone distortion channel.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Randy Rhoads from what I understand had it on all the time and so did Wolf Hoffman from Accept, Balls to the Walls is one of those metal classic tones.

EDIT:
But I see what your saying Pierre, those guys had the amps freaking cranked, this is for your appartment use huh ... whats your budget?

Yep, but Randy used it as a boost, not sure about the other dude ;) I really dislike the actual gain they produce. It's not a modern metal tone at all.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

When you need a dirt pedal and you play mainly distorted tones, its a sign you need a better amp!

Or get a Pod or something at least.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Nah I don't play metal THAT often, but a good metal tone would certainly make me challenge myself more :D My amp is brilliant, just not much of a heavy rock amp.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Well, DamageControl demonizer blew me away, I dont know if its in your budget, but It could be huge addition to your tonal pallet beyond just cruch.

I disagree to be honest, I push my JMP with a Fulltone Fulldrive for metal as my main sound. I love it. It is all a matter of taste.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Both the Demonizer and Solid Metal are too expensive for me. I tried the Solid Metal a bunch of times and it sounds amazing. But they're 130 pounds around here.

Right now the two contenders are the Righterous Tones Fang and the Subdecay Blackstar distortion.

Then buy one from a US webshop. I bought my Womanizer from musictoyz.com. $299+shipping+around 20%taxes+30EUR for a European Line6 POD power supply. Still cheaper than buying from a European shop.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

The Boss MD-2 is pretty awesome. To me it is their smoothest distortion, and it can get really heavy. Or you could try one of the vatiations of the ProCo RAT. The DeuceTone is awesome.

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

if you love that Marshall crush:

Re: Metal distortion pedal for me?

Rocktron Metal Planet ... easy on the wallet and you can get just about any distortion sound you want out of it ,the EQ is awesome and its a quiet pedal. This is the only Distortion box I have had that really pushes air out of my cab...it dont sound like a pedal it sounds like a amp.
