Metal/hard rock tube head for $500-600

Re: Metal/hard rock tube head for $500-600

I personally did not like the Carvin V3 at all for rock/metal ( I went down to the factory in San Diego with my own guitar with Blackouts, and through a cab with Vintage 30s). The tone just seemed boring to me for a high-gain amp; I was able to get out decent tones with it after EQing for awhile, but nothing that would blow me away.

However, some people seemed to like it- and my friend modded his and he is in LOVE with it. Try it out for yourself first if you can.

Tiny terror clips are killer! Ive been wanting to get a low wattage tube amp with a good bit of gain. I love my PV classic 30, but it only gets into classic rock territory..

was thinking about the krank rev jr. but cant play one anywhere

Re: Metal/hard rock tube head for $500-600

Thanks guys! I've been checking out the suggestions but I got to admit:

Metal tone is more important than rock tone to me. I'd like to have more gain than I need.

Its easier to roll back the volume knob, or gain knob to dillute.
Oh I forgot, AOR has Push/Pull boosts on Bass/Middle/Treble, if you do the AOR scoop, that is you crank the mids to 1 o'clock or more but dont pull it, and then pull the Bass/Treble boosts you get the modern metal sound no problem, thick as hell. Check out Laneyforum.com there are clips of dude doing Doom Metal with AORs, if that is not enough gain for you than ... oh well ....

I've suggested this before in other threads. A used Mesa F-30 head in to a 4x12: Loud as hell, pristine clean channel, great dist channel, and a "contour" boost. The bass frequencies on the boost can be a bit loose for some -- depends on your taste, so some people use a pedal boost instead.

F-30s are awesome- you wouldn't think they were Mesa's cheapest amp :)

Re: Metal/hard rock tube head for $500-600

I just sold my Trace Elliot SpeedTwin on ebay, it went for $532 + shipping. That was a steal for an amp that was around $2K new. Of course, I bought it used for a good deal too. Not many people know about these, but if you find one, you can probably get it pretty cheap. Awesome clean channel, nice crunch, and the high gain is kinda in between a Mesa and a Marshall with more gain than you need.

That said, I'm using a modded old Laney pre-AOR 50W Pro-Tube head 'cause I like running pedals and the simplicity of a single channel amp.
