Metal Muff or another pedal for the Heavies?

Hey guys,

So, i temporarily had a Metal Muff w. Top boost for the heavy stuff, and it sounded great and had OD capabilities, etc. I Have a Orange AD-30 HTC with Orange PPC212-C that would be the amp for this. Before i go ahead and order another MM, does anyone have another recommendation for something that covers OD- Super High Gain? I don't want to miss out on good stuff by ordering the same thing twice!

Some that had caught my eye were the Radials, Carl Martin Plexitone, Xotic+, Fulldrive, GT-500, but not sure if those will take me in to the crazyness that i occasionally need and the amp can't hit on its own.

Thanks!

GL

I recommend you don't be a dumb@$$ and get rid of the next MM again! You had it right to begin with...

Engl E530 Tube preamp (2xJJecc83).
the lead channel can get very brutal without a OD in front.... the only problem is, it's a rack preamp.

Rocktron Silver Dragon. 2 channels, 1 tube, lot's of low end chunk and grind.

I prefer the zombified rectifier by them for these tones, as far as versatility I really like the Twin Tube Mayhem.....

Ah yes haven't tried those yet, Rocktron has a lot of different distortion pedals. I've found that after a tube swap the dragon sounds like a mesa in a box. I A/B'ed it with a V-twin and the distortion part on the dragon was much heavier for that kind of tone. The overdrive side is great as well because you can dial in the bass and treble to your taste.
I guess the twin tube would be even better, but does it have the low-midded grind/growl?

Aceman - am i a dumbass for selling it or a dumbass for getting one in the first place? I dont follow your post. If its the former, I didnt screw up, ehx did. The pedal passed away two mornings ago of its own accord. Passed it along to another forum brotha who has the time to fix er up!

Time to replace...

I actually had a silver dragon, just too big for the small amount i ever needed... I'll look in to the mayhem, heard lots of good things.

Wish i had the disposable coin for the engl ;)

I've got a Metal Muff w. Top boost, I'll sell cheap!

Re: Metal Muff or another pedal for the Heavies?

i use my Zvex Box of Rock for EVERYTHING.

it needs a boost from an OD to get as heavy as you'd want for extreme metal but the tone is there all day. I put the BoR as the last pedal in my chain and goose with an 808 for a raw / 70's / unpolished metal tone or goose it with my MXR Zakk Wylde for a more processed / "typical" metal tone.

I have a Silver Dragon as well. This type of music is not my thing. I like the Metal Muff with TB as well but it does not have the low end of the Silver Dragon if that is what you want out of it.

Re: Metal Muff or another pedal for the Heavies?

Just get another Metal Muff.

If I was getting my heavy sound from a pedal, that would probably be the one.

Re: Metal Muff or another pedal for the Heavies?

I really like the Barber Direct Drive. Great tones both low and high gain.

Rocktron Silver Dragon, had some time. Reallly liked the serperate od to distortion sounds I could get out it.
Said so long to it after awhile due to one minor differece difference between it and other pedals such as Boss, Visual Sound and MXR.

Meet the Silver Dragon power supply.

Just curious, what happened exactly? Daisy chain accident? Fried something?

Assume you mean the Metal Muff - And i have no idea. Had it powered by its own EHX 9.6v adapter, worked great and then one morning, nothing. Cleaned the pots and switches, took a look at the board, gave in and sent it to someone with more time than I. :dunno:

Re: Metal Muff or another pedal for the Heavies?

You might consider the Metal Nano... IMHO it sounds much better than the MM with boost.

Cheap and small and BROOTAL!

Re: Metal Muff or another pedal for the Heavies?

The Metal Muff with top boost is a pretty nice pedal, although I think it has a distinct eighties metal tone to it.

I myself am using an Eagletone Hell Dude for the heavier distortion sounds an em extremely happy with that stompbox!! (it is actualy a relabled Biyang Metal End, you'll find them relabled as Akai, Eagletone, Fame, Collins, and many more).
Loads of tweaking options on this pedal, and all of them are actualy useful! On top of it it can be bought for little money, and is made with quality components!!! Highly recommended!!!
