whatever, i know what i hear, i speak from experience, not from what i read in magazines or hear from friends.

i play metal, thats has lots and lots of tremolo picking, basswood sucks for that. mahogany doesnt. half of you guys prolly dont know what kind of music im talking about... you prolly think when i say metal, you think pantera...... i mean **** like gorgoroth or dark funeral

any technician or luthier can tell me im wrong, but thats not gonna change a damn thing, ive experienced what i said above... so im still going to say and believe every word of it.

Ever thought that maybe all that has something to do with the guitar as a whole and not just the wood it's made of?

why do they call it basswood tho, mahogany gives off more bass with a duncan distortion in it ;P they should call it treblewood ..

It's not pronounced basewood....

it's pronounced basswood...

ie, bass;

i know, i just pointed that out to someone the other day, the basswood-treblewood thing was just a joke, but still i wonder why its called basswood...

why is a pencil called a pencil.... nobody knows

Re: Metal pickup / basswood body

Now guys relax about basswood !!!
I have the expetience of basswood through an Ibanez roadstar and it is an unbeleivable resonnant wood , unplugged is sound nearly as big as an acoustic guitar and THAT IS A GOOD starting point :yeah:
It just means that any quality p-u will do a good job in it .
Now if you put a Duncan Distortion or EMG or any fuzzy p-u you won't make the most of it because those p-u mask the tone of the guitar , they have too much personnality ; in mine there is a Custom5 and it does wonder : BIG tight bass , neutral mids ( remember thick and creamy mids won't give you clarity if you want it , especially in chords ) and singing and not ears piercing highs .
What do you want more ?

Re: Metal pickup / basswood body

Basswood is good...and hiss and buzz has nothing to do with wood like others have said. It has to do with pickups and electronics. No one was saying you didn't hear what you say you did Gugnir they are just saying that the problem is coming from somewhere else.

As far as pickups go for basswood I would go with a Distortion for the bridge. Although basswood does sound better with a pickup that enhances the characteristics that the wood already has. Lower output pickups are very nice in Basswood. I play some metal on my Basswood mockingbird and it has pickups much like 59s in it. I actually prefer them to higher output pups for metal. But I suppose it depends what kind of metal you are playing. I don't tune down a lot. Good luck :)

Re: Metal pickup / basswood body

I used the Invader in the brigde of my Ibanez, and it made a almost perfect match.

I believe that the basswood used in ibanezes have a less compressed and compact tone than mahagony, just in general more airy and transparent. That seemed to counteract the massiveness of the Invader!

It actually sounded less muddy in the bass and less harsh in the treble than the stock pu, and had a very chrunchy and "Chuggy" tone when played palm muted.

Its leads and mid-gain tones were as expected, i did'nt get that smooth, singing controllable tone i wanted. With the Invader it was pretty much full throttle all the time, with it's metallic-like top end.

I had to sell the Pu to buy strings though :smack: ...... but it's a great pickup, and i'd love to have it in a heavy metal rhythm guitar!

I hope you found this review helpful,

Re: Metal pickup / basswood body

Basswood can be a very good wood.. EVH has used lot's of it.. Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and a few more.. It's just another wood. It has a great blurry warm sound.. I'm putting a Duncan Distortion in mine and I'm sure it's going to be good. That Pup sounds good in everything I've ever had it in , except it was a tad bit bright in a maple bodied bolt on maple necked Kramer, but that guitar was bright to begin with.. Mahogany is mid heavy to me..

I like the 81, but I wouldn't put it in basswood.

85? yes. 81? No.

Just my opinion.

FAIR ENOUGH :)
i use mine in mahogany/maple so i really dont know
i do feel she KILLS in a lester

Re: Metal pickup / basswood body

I've always thought basswood was crap until I learned how many pros are actually using it. Anyway, pickups. I think screamingdaisy is right when he says not to put the EMG 81 in that guitar, because basswood is kinda bright; the 81 would just accent that. The 85, from what I hear is less bright and more mid-focussed.
