Metal pickups

Re: Metal pickups

IMHO I think the Nazgul has much better high end cut then the Pegasus. Although the Pegasus doesn't have none. If I were you I would get the Nazgul first, and then if you want more versatility you could do the 21 day exchange. But I would really put my money on you liking the Nazgul more. The Nazgul is more in your face and edgy then the Pegasus. The Pegasus is about as edgy as a Custom.

Re: Metal pickups

Okay Naz seems good then, doubt many people have tried the BareKnuckles Rags but the Naz seems like it will fit the bill well
The sentient necks seems perfect for the job I need a neck pup for.

Re: Metal pickups

i would avoid the custom 5/59, the nazgul, and the titans all for different reasons. The custom 5 and 59 neck are both scooped as all hell to a fault and the 59 neck doesnt handle low tunings too well. Its boomy and uncontrollable under high gain even in standard. The nazgul is a bit of a disaster honestly. Its not terribly clear and doesnt cut too well. Its great for metalcore/deathcore, thrash and stuff like that tho. For that application its overcompressed in a good way. u dont have to work too hard with the breakdowny bits. The titan...i had the bridge model and i really wanted to like it but i couldnt. It has a very extreme eq curve to my ears. It pulls all the bass end out and pushes up the mids beyond comprehension. Its a very dry pickup with bass that cant be dialed back in without getting muddy and mids that cant be dialed out without losing punch. Its about as compressed as an sh5 custom. It has really good clarity (about on par with the omega), but none of the bare knuckle openness in the highs. Compared to the omega its far more middy, a bit less compressed. based on ur beef in the low end description id go for either of mishas pickups (juggs or rags)

Re: Metal pickups

My first thoughts are the Black Winters or the Pegasus/Sentient. Either set will do what you want (and more, actually).

I’ve already got ideas for what I want black winters (Gibson white Flying V) in and I don’t generally have two of the same pickups in different guitars as I’m looking for a palette of tones
If the nazgul is flubby and doesn’t cut well for Drop c, c standard and Drop b I suppose I’d have to pick the Pegasus/Sentient or the Ragnaroks.
That being said I have had experience with black winters and loved them but never used them for Drop B
Also the full shred set seem good.

Well, the Nazgul doesn't sound flubby. it just isn't particularly good for anything other than really heavy music.

Which is why the Pegasus was my first suggestion. It is more versatile. But the pickups you like lean more towards the Nazgul side of things. I didn't even think about the Black Winters, even better if you can get the Blackened ones with hex poles. Those hex ones would be way more up your alley.

Re: Metal pickups

Yeah when I say black winter I meant the blackened winters as my Schecter Keith Merrow had them and they slayed but I never went bellow Drop C on that guitar so not sure how it would handle drop B.

merrow plays in like drop a they should be fine. look into fishmans maybe? If they got merrow to leave duncan...

Re: Metal pickups

If this doesn’t help....nothing will.
Fwiw, I thought the Black Winters sounded the most “metal” to me.

Man I’ve watched that video more times than I can remember, problem is that a lot of them sound great, Nazgul, Omega, Pegasus, Black winter, Full Shred.
The black winters are a great set of pups.
I just have to pick between the Black Winter, Pegasus/Sentient and Ragnaroks

Re: Metal pickups

id go rags just cuz i like bare knuckle

I’ve only played the aftermath (had a little too much high end for me)
And the custom wound set in my multiscale
Alnico 8 in the bridge wound to be a “High Gain Articulate Modern pickup) and the neck is an alnico 2 wound to act as high output PAF so its good for leads and cleans
Use those for Drop A and B standard and they absolutely slay.

Re: Metal pickups

ive got juggernauts and i have absolutely no complaints. they do everything well. Not rly compressed enough for deathcore style stuff but thats the only thing they dont do well

Yeah I’m going for Juggs in my custom build coming up.
Lundgren M6 seem pretty sweet too

I agree, although there are many Duncans that sound great with low tunings. If I was going really low, I'd consider actives unless I wanted the fuzzy splatty low end of say, early Sabbath. Remaining tight and clear under a ton of gain is what actives really do best.

Do you define Drop B as really low??
I’d say Drop G or F# is really low

Re: Metal pickups

I would, yes, as it is a 4th lower. G or F# is likely out of the range of many guitar amps, though, so you'd probably have to invest in some different amplification before you get to pickups.

Re: Metal pickups

One of my guitars that I’m having (just wanting on being able to collect it) has Blackouts in it so I could perhaps try those and then if I don’t think they work I’ll try one of the options Stated here such as the black winters, Pegasus/sentient or Ragnaroks
But if for whatever reason the blackout doesn’t fit the bill which of these do you think would be most fitting for what I was looking for?

Re: Metal pickups

go ragnaroks. Just cause even the highest output bare knuckles tend to be super clear, super versatile, and have that airy top end that cuts without being super bright.
