i love the sound of the distortion Megadeth has
what is my best option to take my sound closer?

i'm thinking about saving up for one of these "Randall RH300G3 G3 Series Guitar Amp Head" will that amp head be good for Megadeth songs?

a much cheaper way for now would be to get a noise gate & distortion peddle
i was looking at the MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal, looks like a good noise gate

so what distortion peddle is best for the Megadeth tone till i get money for better equipment? :D

Re: Metal Tone

If you're looking at a pedal, that will entirely depend on what amp you have now.

You can't put a good pedal into a cheap amp and expect it to sound awesome.

Re: Metal Tone

I agree with Mephis, but would like to add that it's volume-dependent, as well. If you have a cheap amp, and you find the right pedal, you can get great tones, at very low volumes. Turn it up, and it'll go to poo. My home rig is a cheap little practice amp that I run various modelers and pedals through. At low volume, it sounds great. Turned up, blech.

Re: Metal Tone

If you have good cleans and are fond of your amp (ie you don't want to get rid of it to trade up) get a Damage Control Demonizer. Lots of distortion sounds in it and it's as hard core as any pedal I've tried. Sounds great.

Re: Metal Tone

thanks for the input about the distortion peddles
how about that randall head i was talking about
it's high gain, but maybe it wont do Megadeth that well

Re: Metal Tone

+1 for demonizer, the only clipp that trully blew me away, amazing tweakability of saturation and the entire "wall of doom" on tap.

Absolutely. I can't think of anything in the realm of heavy metal distortion that it can't do. It's vicious and ultra flexible. It will turn any normal amp like a fender etc into a real flame-throwing beast. This thing doesn't have a 1-dimensional sound at all. It's thick and howling aggression in a rather large clunky stomp box. Turned my normally sweet and sassy Edana into the devil itself. What more can you ask for? I was floored when I played it myself. So much so that I'm paying for one I got off fleabay today.

Do you run it through clean Edana or you push it already being driven by itself?

Re: Metal Tone

Clean. No need to push with this pedal. It brings the hotness all by itself. You can run direct with it into a PA or recording in. It's designed to do it all without depending on the amp. Therefore, you can run a gorgeous clean sound on the Edana on one channel, a dirtied up channel for AC/DC type stuff and a "OMFG I'VE LIT THE WORLD ON FIRE" channel with the demonizer thru the clean channel. The demonizer has two channels itself, but the 20 db gain boost is almost insignificant because the overall gain is so high. 20 db might be a lot in an overdrive pedal etc, but for this pedal it's like adding just a touch more saturation etc. If you run it at lower settings, it would be more pronounced.

Re: Metal Tone

The demonizer looks like pro quality & the reviews are good
just goto save up the $

Re: Metal Tone

I have a few different heavy distortion pedals, and my favorite of the bunch is the Boss Mega Distortion. It is really versatile in covering overdrive, rock distortion, and metal distortion tones, and it sounds great with both tube amps and solid state amps.

Re: Metal Tone

Crate bluevoodoo and Marshall 900 slx

and Bogner Ubershall, VHT Ultra Lead, Krank Revolution, Diezel, Brunetti :)
Ostap Custom also...

Re: Metal Tone

if you're looking for something cheap to tide you over, check out behringer's GDI21 (sansamp clone). nice high gain device for practice and recording. a tad noisy, but has a lot of options with all the switches.

Re: Metal Tone

As a general rule, I've found:

Getting a better amp > Getting a better distortion pedal.

Crates can sound decent enough as practice amps, but to be perfectly frank, their lower-end solid state models are very limited. You can only do so much with a better distortion pedal.

I can't say I've ever tried a demonizer, but at $300 I'd say you're better off saving a little bit more and getting a better amp. There are other options though...I've heard good things about the Robert Keeley mod for the boss metal zone. That one's roughly half the price of the demonizer.

John Spina here on the forums does some very nice mods to boss pedals as well. I had a DS-1 modded by him for a while and it was pretty bitchin.

Re: Metal Tone

Don't knock it until you've tried it fellas. It's the meanest high gain tone I've heard out of a pedal and it's versatile. Sounds tubey, thick and full. Crushing gain and the most versatile tone stacks I've seen. I don't think there is a high gain tone it can't do.

Plus, skip paying $300 for it new. Buy it on fleabay for $80 cheaper. Most sell it because it's huge and bulky and has a special power adapter. Those are downsides to consider. If you view it as an additional channel or two for your amp, it doesn't seem so bad in terms of space taken and power adapter used.
