so, I was talking to a guy the other day that mentioned that using metal humbucking rings, as opposed to plastic, can change your sound. I can see this being the case, since the pickup is suspended from these rings, and the vibrations from the body have to to go through it to get to the pickup to "sweeten" the tone. but on the other hand, how much difference can it make? anybody?

I see this as analogous to the direct-mounted pickup argument.
I'm not sure that the average guitarist could tell the difference in a blind A/B test. Even assuming that folks could tell the difference, I don't see there being anything resembling consensus about which one was preferable. If there's no domination between humbuckers and single coils, it seems unlikely that a particular pickup ring material could be viewed as generally superior.
