Metal Zone / Metal Muff / Metal Core

Hi There,

Can anyone comment on how these three compare...I have the Zone and the Muff.....I find the Muff to be a bit more bottom heavy that the Zone and it also has more sustain and better for feedback....How is the Core?

The unlike the Metalzone the Metalcore has preset mids and has three basic sounds in it. One is a brighter deathmetal type tone, another reminds me of a 5150, and the last is a heavy tone with less top end than the other two.

Compared to the MetalZone it has a more pleasing midrange. I think it's a nice pedal to have for practicing at home but don't expect it to be able to cut through live.... not enough mids for that.

I've played 'em all and personally preferred the sound of the metal muff the best. they were all through a fender Blues jr. with a strat.

have you checked out rocktron yet? some good stuff. they've got metal planet, silver dragon and zombie distortion. they're all good

I like the Metal Zone better than the Zombie, but I like the Mega Distortion best when it comes to a classy take on heavy distortion pedals.

Similar debate but what does everyone think is the best BOSS metal pedal or heavy pedal for better words. Like including any pedal from the HM-2 to the metalizer (the one with delay and chorus) to the metal core and in betweens including xtortion and mega distortion and stuff.

I didnt like the Muff on its own, it sounded OK when mixed with a bit of gain from my 2204's preamp, but otherwise it was too fizzy IMO. But then it would get too noisy, so I ended up selling it.

NOT my type of genre, but it is still soooo good, i just have to get one for those very rare metal moments !!!

Hey you might want to check out the Line6 metal stompbox. Its got a couple different distortions in one box that sound great. I had a metalzone but I couldn't get along with it. Too buzzy for my tastes, not organic enough.

The song on my myspace was played thru line6 'metal' distortion.

I like the DS-1 for it's nasty, sputtering distortion.

The Metalcore is for heavy stuff in the vein of death metal and the like where scooped mids are the norm, but you may find it hard to cut through in a band mix.

The Metalzone is cool in a nasty, heavy kinda way. Silverchair used this for their primary distortion tone for years.

Right now I'm really liking these new Russian Big Muffs. Bigger, looser square wave than the NYC re-issues.... more akin to the older Green Russians. More punchy and less fuzzy, and you can actually palm mute with it.

I currently own a Line 6 Uber Metal pedal and a Rocktron Metal Planet
the Metal Planet is by far the best hi gain distortion pedal I have ever had , and its dead quiet! it is the most versatile and realistic sounding
My uber metal sounds huge, over the top and fake

90% of the time I use my amps distortion though

I have a bunch of distortions from Boss and other companies, and the Mega Distortion is my overall favorite right now.

I have really fond memories of using a Metalizer in front of a HUGE Randall 6x10 closed back combo... early 80s or maybe even '70s era amp. I recall it had red stripes... The combination was really thick & had a super tight bottom end.

Back in the high-skool, college daze that was... my drummer had it on a long-term loan from someone and I didn't feel like lugging a 1/2 stack around once or twice a week. MUCH easier to roll in with a guitar and some stomps...

On the flip, I can't recall the Metalizer sounding all that hip through any other amps like the 1x12 solid state combo... Fender M-85, 80 or something?

I haven't used enough of the other boss "metal" pedals to know what they're all about. Never got along with the Metal Zone all that much & then it got snagged...

Agreed, those Russian Muffs do sound better than the NYC one. If only they would build them to last. I've had to put mine back together 3 or 4 times.

If you can find a Boss heavy metal pedal, for me that was the best "metal" distortion they have ever made. the HM-2. Much more useable than the metalzone.

Have you guys tried the Subdecay Blackstar? Shell out abit more money but it will be worth it.

For the Boss pedals, I prefer the Mega Distortion one to the rest for metal tones. The Metalzone, in live situations I've heard have been too crispy, spiky and just annoying on the ears. Haven't heard the metal core, and for fooling around with some metal, like RATM, my Tele and DS-1 pull it off. I wouldn't take my word too highly though considering I don't play metal.

I currently use the Metal Zone.. I was alternating between my DS-1 Distortion and the Metal Zone, the DS-1 was more abrasive and it had a rougher distortion than my Metal Zone. I liked the flexibility that I have with the Metal Zone as far as EQ.

I have had a bunch of different distortion pedals including an original Big Muff Pi, Original Rat, Rat II, Turbo Rat, Original Tube Screamer, TS-10 classic, TS-9, Boss Super Overdrive, Boss Overdrive, Russian Big Muff, Pi, Distortion + (Script and non-script), Daddy-O, Boss Heavy Metal, DOD American Metal, Digitech Hot Rod Distortion, Snarling Dogs Vari-Tone, and a billion more than I can remember...

Some pedals work well with some amps and some just don't do it. I generally try to find something that works within the parameters of what I need. There were times that I have used my Heavy Metal pedal for years... or alternate between the Tube Screamers...

I used to just have a setup that had a stream of pedals...
