garage inc is all emgs...pretty much everything after and justice for all is emg pickups...everything until and justice for all was duncan distoertion and invaders
sorry for highjacking this post but since this is in the same subject... if i was looking to get metallica's emg tone but with passive duncan pups what would you suggest
probably the same pickups they used before emgs hehe...distortion and invader...nothing really sounds exactly like an active but an active....jb's can handle the leads but dont have enough beef to handle emg style chunk...distortions would work great...you may want to look into dimarzio d activators...from what i hear they are based in the emg 81 an 85 set but are passive
the invader is so unbelievable for early metallica sounds. i have it in my all mahogany double cut (hamer copy) and it slays. it's truly a dose of bottled hetfield. i love it.
I doubt very much that Hetfield used an Invader in 'Kill'em All', there isn't too much low end on those guitar tracks.
I think he probably used the invader since 'Ride the Lightning' though, but it's quite a different guitar tone in 'Kill'em All'.
Kirk started using EMG well before ajfa. The black RR1 he got after rtl was factory loaded with EMGs, that is how he ordered it. But matching the pickups won't give you their sound. Even if you matched the restbof their rig, a huge part of their (or anyone else's) sound is the guy sitting behind the mixer. And that's the part you probably won't be able to match.
Edit: Oooops, kinda old... Didnt notice it from my phone.:/

James recorded Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning with the Electra Flying V copy that supposedly had a Duncan Distortion. Master of Puppets was the Explorer with stock Dirty Fingers. The only Invader I know of was in James's Jackson King V which was only used live in '86 and '87.
Kirk recorded Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning with his Gibson Flying V which supposedly had a Duncan Distortion as well. He acquired the Fernandes 'Edna' Strat in late '84 or early '85 and initially loaded it with SD Hot Stacks before switching to EMGs that summer. He acquired the Jackson RR around the same time with factory-installed EMGs. Kirk's guitar tracks on Master of Puppets were mostly if not exclusively done with the RR.
Distortion will do Metallica justice. I loved it for those exact tones. That said, the Garage Days sound is pure EMG. Maybe get the EMG Het Set or even better that newer set (can't remember the numbers) that people seem to love.
