+1, save you buying $10,000 worth of gear to play like 2 songs!

But seriously, I have a PODxt, and it rocks for home practice and PC recording.

Definietly, it is made for home/recording and it does the task flawless. I do have my doubts about live use.

Still a cheaper alternative: for a simple, straight-ahead 'Tallica-type sound I'd suggest an EMG81 axe -> BOSS MT2 -> EQ -> amp

( + footnotes: don't use maximum gain and cut 800Hz SLIGHTLY and use "/\/\" EQ curve instead of "V" with the EQ pedal )

For older '80s MMM stuff I'd suggest an Invader loaded axe -> BOSS DS1 -> EQ. It will give a rather Marshall-like sound and less gain but more definition.

I think the "Metallica sound" has got to be one of the most asked "how do I get that tone" tones there is.
You'd think one of the pedal companys would have capitalized on this by now.

Me too, although I've got to try one of those Atomic Reactors once they are available over here, hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised...

they wouldnt nail it.. the pedal would sound ****ty. trust me.. every stock pedal realeased these days doesnt sound all that good... plus lar$ would sue them probably
i say, get a metal zone and get keeley or stratdeluxer to mod it. you should preferably have a tube amp, but you can get close with a SS amp, if you tweak it right (depends on what amp brand you have though). high output pickups will do you a big favor also

the thing with the black album though, it's multitracked, overdubbed and layered into oblivion. they dont have that kickass type of sound live or when they record just one track.. except for het maybe =P

Re: metallica distortion

Despite people not wanting to hear "you can't get ___ with a pedal," it's usually true. Distortion pedals are gonna distort your sound, they all do that. That doesn't mean it's gonna be closer to a sound that was made with various heads in a studio.

If you are set on buying something in the pedal range (money wise), then I would suggest you buy something like an ADA MP-1 instead. A typical new distortion pedal like the metal zone will cost what, around $90 new(I honestly have no idea, not much of a fan when it comes to distortion pedals :))? Well for a little more, you can go with the ada mp1 preamp and that would be MUCH closer to that type of tone than any distortion pedal. This is assuming you do have some kind of power amp to plug into :) Kirk and James both used the MP1 in the late 80s and early 90s fwiw...

i screwed around with these pedals before and got a good call of ktulu sound

Ahh, never thought of the early stuff that was done on Marshalls....

....I was thinking of their later stuff (MOP and on), after they had switched to Boogies....

.....my apologies. :burnout:

For MOP and onwards, I still suggest a Tech21 SansAmp GT-2. Check out the soundclips and you'll see what I mean.

Re: metallica distortion

If you listen to the clips that screamingdaisy provided, I think he's right.

If you're in the market to spend a decent amount of money - $200, look at the Tone Bone Hot British, G2D Morpheus etc.

I just listened to them again myself....

...I think that pedal (on the British [Marshall] setting), combined with an EQ (for scooping) would cover early Metallica stuff as well.

That's the way I went back in my SS days! :laugh2:

Actually, it worked quite well and had me satisfied.

If you are in search for a good heavy tone like Metallica's Black Album days. Drop the little bit of dough for a Metal Zone, Graphic EQ, and if you want (which I used), an overdrive to to have a little more control over your sound.

Good luck, Rombola! :headbang:

As a SS user with a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone I can attest to this as well. You can never get a perfect tone using a SS amp and just effects in my opinion... But until I get enough money to buy a tube amp I'm stuck here in Lack-of-Tone Country :smack: . In any case, the Metal Zone really isn't that bad for a metallica crunch depending on how you set the amp and pedal's EQs.

Amp (see sig): bass 8-9
mids 2-3
treb 6-7
MT-2: lows 3 o'clock
highs 11-12 o'clock
mid level 11-12 o'clock
mid freq 9-11 o'clock

Once you turn the mid level up the mid freq knob's effect isn't quite as apparent. Anyway go spend the money on a Metal Zone and maybe a tubescreamer or something like that and you will be set until you have the cash for a tube amp :blackeye:
