Metallica gear? Load?

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

from what i remember, they used marshall for a little, then mesa mk 4 type amps, but modern tone is mesa/diezel or somthing. Sorry i dont know for sure. Load definitly has a good tone, but IMO not their best

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

James used a Mesa Dual and EMG 81/60 pickups. Kirk uses Mesa Triples I believe and dual EMG 81s. For Load anyway.

You can check my site (www.montyjay.com) for their gear history/list. It's frozen right now though.

For Load, they used a TON of different amps but the core tone was a Triaxis, IIC+, and an Arrendondo modified Marshall. They had fenders, vox, matchless, etc...But the meat of the tone was from those three units.

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

That album has such a special tone. It's the best tone Metallica ever had IMO.

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

A lot of the big crunch sounds like Marshalls. It sure is a great sounding record, except the drums...just never like the drums though they work for their style.

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

I'm not much of a fan of Lars' sound either.

The sound on MOP was killer, then in And Justice... was tinny, just awful. On the Black Album it sounds way too compressed and reverbed, then in Load it was tighter, snappier and dryier.

And of course, St. Anger was awesome... :smack:

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

i felt the steel drum snare they used on St Anger made the whole record "cheap" sounded like they recorded it in a tin can.

i just couldnt get used to it.

I agree Load was probably when the guitars sounded best

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

For some reason I always thought Metallica had good tone....especially Black Load and Reload.

Or..maybe just that those albums seemed so well recorded to me or something...I dunno. But I liked something about the sound there.

Their older tone worked well with their older stuff though.

It was more than just the snare drum, that whole disc was garbage.

Oh yeah, forgot to add, IMHO.

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

Don't worry, anyone who likes saint anger has been put in a mental hospital by now.
I like it, yet I still roam the streets. :D

Anyway, I remember when Load came out, they were doing a lot of vintage talk in the magazines. I remember Kirk mentioning a Matchless Spitfire and a 60's Strat, and James talking a lot about a Telecaster and old Fender amp. They would often use the same rig, but Kirk would stick his Tubescreamer in front.

I really think a lot of that album's tone comes from the fact that it's the first time you're hearing both of them.
