Re: Mex Strat Frets
Oh i hate the new Squire Standards. The bridges on them are closer to the American Standard bridge but made out of really bad metal! I've repaired them and the saddle threads strip easy. I own a Squire 2 point bridge i bought for a project guitar and need to unload it. It's new and after seeing the quality up close i wouldn't install it. The wood in those cheap squires suck compaired to the new Mexican standards.
I own a 1994 Squire strat that was made in Mexico and it is really close to the Mexican Standard. Same body and neck. I believe Fender was without an overseas contract and made Squires for 2 years in Mexico. The Strats were only avilable in Black. I still own that guitar and still play it sometimes at jams and minor gigs. It came with cheaper tuners and a different bridge, but thru a few friends at repair shops i managed to get the better Mexican Standard bridge and Tuners and replaced them on this Mex Squire. Now it is pretty much a Mexican Standard besides a little sign on the headstock that says Squire beside Fender. I added a hotrail to the bridge and it is pretty cool for a cheap guitar.
The best Squires came from the early to mid 80's i believe. I saw a white one that was for sale a few years ago, it was beat up and the store wanted $180-Canadian for it. I picked it up and it felt just like a 50's reissue strat. I went away to think about it and came back and it was gone. 6 months later i saw an early 80's Squire just like it selling in Toronto for $700Canadian.......

But bigger frets, a floating 2 point bridge (which I dont like), more mass to the headstock, alnico pickups, and a whole lot cooler finishes.
