MF Deal: Svetlana EL34 quad for $60!

Re: MF Deal: Svetlana EL34 quad for $60!

Thats a good deal.

The Svetlana 12ax7 is probably the best modern 12ax7 I have used in a v1 slot.

Yeah. New svets are made by new sensor..same with the new mullard, tungsol, eh, genalex, and telefunken. They are really buying up and banking on those old names.

^ yeah, the good ones are the ones with the Winged "C" logo. Too bad those are drying up- the last best tubes ever made.
Nothing but complete junk anymore. Se la Vie...worse yet is they have dismantled the tool and dies, or whatever its called, and relagated it to the dustbin of History.

All is not lost though(?)- I mean, I run the Chinese stuff ("Mesa 6L6 tubes") in my 6505, long as you change them out every year or two anymore I think. If stuff like Groove tubes still has the QC, and I guess are 'New Sensor' tubes, I expect they will be fairly reliable, although the structural integrity is not, and sound for certain is not comparable to the old Svetlana tubes. Right?

Not quite . . Telefunken power tubes are now made by JJ Electronic.

Fender bought Groove Tube and those companies didn't throw their tooling in a dust bin, so Jerry's just mashing the keys and hoping for the best once again.

Groove tubes were just relabeled ( but matched and checked with quality control ) Russian Sovtek ( which are the same as JJ or EH? )or Chinese tubes anyway- , I would buy the Fender Groove tubes, sure, same as Mesa Chinese tubes, but they weren't as good as the Winged C'sSvetlanas I don't believe.

Ahhh....ok. I was told differently by someone who deals in tubes. I stand corrected.

Jerry is definitely mashing keys and hoping for the best, but there is no doubt the New Sensor versions are inferior to their original namesakes. Ive got new and old mullard 12ax7s here and its like comparing a Blackstar HT5 to a Bogner Ecstasy.

The blues are also on sale as matched pairs if you don't need a matched quad. 30 bucks for a pair.

Re: MF Deal: Svetlana EL34 quad for $60!

being not real versed in tubes, whats the green mean? more of a mild tone? whereas the reds would be for harder music? which would work better in a jcm 800?

thanks for the heads up!! I need to check the sdod every day. Always miss the deals on stuff I need..

I know the winged C (=C=) Svetlanas were built really rugged and could take high plate voltages better than most tubes, but tone is sort of subjective. I remember them sounding more compressed than JJ's, which might be good for some amps.

As for GT, it must have been a fairly easy acquisition for Fender. GT was basically a testing/matching company, so all Fender had to do was buy their brand name and some test equipment....not sure about GT employees.
I know Aspen Pittman, and he turned his warehouse into a recording studio which may not have been that smart, but also it's a warehouse for his massive stash of collectibles. As a matter of fact, he's been selling tons of collectibles on LA Craigslist. It makes me wonder if he quickly ran out of Fender's money.
