MIA tele refinish project

Re: MIA tele refinish project

so i got the sanding sealer on there and sanded down to 320 grit in prep for the primer. Im using a white nitro based primer from reranch. i sprayed this on using the dan erlewine (spelling?) double coat method. basically you spray one coat, wait about 15 minutes for the solvents to rise out and then spray a second coat. after that, you wait 24 hours and repeat the process as necessary. you dont need to build up a decent layer with the primer, only put enough on there to cover the body. here it is after that:

next up is the color coats. i elected not to sand the primer coat since by visual inspection it really didnt need it and its such a thin coat that it would have ensured sand throughs had i tried to.

so after the first double pass on the top with the "LP gold top" gold, also from reranch, it looks like this. Im spraying really light coats with this stuff btw

this will cure for 24 hours then ill hit it with another coat. might be longer than 24 hours, depends on the weather and my schedule

Re: MIA tele refinish project

Looks great!!! Do you know what colour of pickguard you're going with? My suggestion is black, although white would be a more classic look.

Re: MIA tele refinish project

Looking good so far... I hadn't really ever thought of a gold tele... Now you're giving me ideas. :naughty:

Re: MIA tele refinish project

yeah, im thinking a white pearl pickguard from warmoth wold look pretty awesome on this when its done

Re: MIA tele refinish project

I'll throw in my 2 Eurocents - White Pearl or Vintage Pearl (creme). I think either would be beautiful.

Looking great so far, man!

Re: MIA tele refinish project

Nice, scottish. It looks great so far. When spraying metallics, it's better to spray it on the "dry" side to avoid and runs and the metallic particles will stand up better. Are you following the advice on Reranch about spraying some over the body and letting it settle? You shouldn't need to sand until the clear coat is on. In fact, I wouldn't.

im going to do the final coat as a 'misting' to really bring out the flakes. as for sanding...yeah, there is no way im gonna try and sand a flaked finish. that sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. ill sand when i have a decent amount of clear coat on there.

Cool. It should come out looking great. I'll be doing a Tele in Lake Placid Blue this year so I've been doing a lot of reading on the Reranch site. Thankfully, LPB is typically a one coat finish.

Is there shielding in the cavaties already or is that just to avoid paint buildup?

Ya wanna re-do my CAR MIM Nashville, as long as squirting LPB around?

Re: MIA tele refinish project

love the look so far... concidering what it looked like when you started it already looks 100% better

Re: MIA tele refinish project

haha I know. When I came back into this thread to post the newest two pics I noticed the same thing. It does look a hell of a lot better already.

Re: MIA tele refinish project

its coming, lol. Im waiting on some better weather so i can finish off spraying the gold coats and get on to the clear coats. Its beent too cold here for optimal spraying results.

Be patient my friends, lol

Re: MIA tele refinish project

OK...so with the onset of some better weather ive made some more progress in the spraying. the gold coats should hopefully be done in a few days if all goes to plan. then ill post some pics before i start clear coating.
