Mic for recording demos

Re: Mic for recording demos

I won't pick anything up until after January. I have a lot of other stuff to get in order first.

If anyone has any other models I should look at please post them. Or good/bad qualities of some that have been posted.

Thanks,
Eric

Re: Mic for recording demos

If you didn't want to take the time why even post? Plus your post wasn't even helpful. You said to ignore a magazine (how do I even know that it isn't a reliable source? Is it because YOU said it wasn't? That is what you are basically implying)

The reviews in Mix are really nothing more then ad copy with a couple of new paragraphs for good measure... Nobody in the "trade" puts much, if any stock in them.

There was an infamous one a few years ago on an inexpensive tube preamp where they said it was noisy, build quality was iffy & pointed out several other "problems", all in all... mostly negative but went on to say it'd be a great choice for anyone looking to get a tube preamp without spending a lot of cash.

Instead of posting "Oh why do I even bother?" bs post, you could have taken the time and explained a little about some of the mics I was asking about or something I havn't thought of yet. "The 421 is good at this and this, but lacks in this. The ... is good at or bla bla etc etc." If you have the experience and are willing to take the time to make a post, why not try to make it a helpful one? If you think you are not going to be listened too just ignore the thread. Of the few things you have posted in this thread so far nothing has added to it in a positive way.

Glad I be of help!

Whudda wanna know? I could pontificate on the subject of microphones & placement for hours on end...

I'm far from a "mic bigot" in that I don't see them as "kick drum" or "guitar" or "vocals" only...

A microphone is a microphone. I use them for recording. Pick them like a photographer picks camera lenses...

Case in point, earlier this year I was in a guys hi-fi home studio cutting for his band and he had KM184's as his "overhead mics"... never used them on anything else. Seeing the lack of (IMO) acceptable choices I used one on the snare drum... he proclaimed it the "best sound he's ever heard". Yeah... I know... lol

The 421 is one of my favorite "utility" microphones. Sounds good to great on just about anything. Takes EQ very well. For some applications it's my first choice even over mics costing 10 times as much... For other things, it's not so groovy... but if you care about the sounds you record you'll never outgrow it.

I don't like 57's very much. The upper mid bump is pretty rough...

Re: Mic for recording demos

In my ever growing Mic collection, I have a Shure SM 58,SM48, 2 (pos) CADs (buy one get one free deal) I use for live stereo recording into my 4 track. A Studio Projects B1 Large Diaphragm condenser for my B.S. home studio vocals,AKG C900M for Live vocals. My go to Mic for recording any close mic'ed guitar speaker is this POS Shure Prologue 10L I paid like $30 for around 15 years ago ?? I've A/B'ed w/t my buddies SM57 and we both agreed the crappy Prologue came out on top? Go Figure?:scratchch

And that... is what it's all about.

Using 'yer ears.

Listening.

Developing preferences based on aesthetic.
