Mic Questions - condenser vs. dynamic

Hi, I have very limited mic knowledge. I went into Tom Lee the other weekend and was looking at getting a single sm 58 for recording. The sales guy led me to this Se electronics 1000a condenser mic he said would work better for recording if only using a single microphone. Well it turns out my fast track USB does not have phantom power so that is not working. I am aware that you can get the phantom power boxes but I guess now I'm wondering what's a better route to go. I've read that condenser mics can distort with loud drums and guitar, is this true?

Would I be better off getting a sm58 if only using a single mic or what is going to work better. Also, is there any way with the fast track USB to plug in more than a single microphone through an adapter or something. If not what would be the cheapest way to do that? Thanks.

You can do quite a lot with a SM57 rather than the SM58. A good condenser would be nice but you need phantom power for most of them, some have batteries.

Yeah I realize it needs phantom power, I'm mainly wondering if the condenser or dynamic is better for what I want to do. Also, wondering how I can use multiple dynamic mics (via a mixer or adapter in the fast track USB) at once if I want to do that at some point. Thanks

What do you want to record? If it's vocals and mic an amp cab then a SM57 will do the trick. Certain condensers can handle high volume better than others and will not distort. Cheap condensers are not my first choice though, they start to get better in the 250 and up range. Better is subjective when it comes to mics.
