Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

yes im a 19 year old, that is just starting to get into the big hair scene.

Aaahhhh, the good old days. I'm glad to see guys your age into hair metal. Most kids would rather die than admit they play air guitar to the opening riff of Girlschool. Even if the looks were cheesy to some, the music itself was insane. Most of these nondescript heavy bands today wouldn't be around if it weren't for 80's metal. And what happened to the f-ing solo in today's music? Everything builds up to a good place for ripping lick or run and what do you get, the opening riff, over and over and over. Sorry, ADD kicked in again. Oh,look. A swingset. What did you say?:soapbox:

i would have much rather been born in the 80's than in the 90's. I think the 80's were so cool. Big hair, super strats, leather pants, spandex........what more do you need?! :headbang:

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

I would agree with the JB, although I don't remember that Mike was all that picky. When he was teaching me he had this lovely Firebird and hollowbodied Tele that he seemed to favor. I had asked him about Cinderella and he told me he was the one that started the band.

Might want to take a shot at the `59 too.

how would the '59 compare to the JB?
would it be good for 80's stuff?

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

The answer to most 80's related questions is going to be the Dimarzio Super Distortion or the JB.

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

so.......ive got it down to the '59, JB and the Super Distortion or maybe the duncan distorion. The JB is a for sure maybe, but the sound clips seem to have a big upper mid spike. If i like the over all sound and the output of the JB, but want a little fatter, rounder sound.......which should i go with?

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

jb that's a little fatter/rounder? swap it to either a4(less lows and highs, mids brought out a bit) or a2(big fat mids, loose, round)

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

the a2 does that, as i'm sure the a4 does too. the jb reacts differently to magnets and woods according to other pickups in my experience. i've got an a2 in mine, and it got rid of that annoying nasal quality in the upper mids and is much more pleasant sounding for all sorts of stuff, even cleans. try your DD with an a2, you might like the results.

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

SuperD ain't nothing like the JB. It's more low mid centered. Big,fat&rude.

Think JB=cuts like a blade.
SuperD=hits like a nail embedded 2x4.

The 59 is a good all around pickup. Mick Mars replaced his JB equipped Kramers with it. But it won't cut or scream like a JB, DD, Full Shred etc.

Try a FS in the bridge of that paul. Don't let the tone chart fool you. This thing screams. And lesters have enough low end to balance the FS.

:D

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

honestly, your amplifier is going to start to become limiting factor in getting the tones you want. if you don't have an an amp/speaker/effects setup that will give you a hot-rodded Marshall tone, you're going to struggle trying to emulate a lot of famous 80s hair metal tones. I think you're sweating the pickup choice too much.

if you're going for a great lead tone, go JB or DD. you can do a little work with magnets to fine tune. der scheiss gave a perfect analogy.

the 59 is a great versatile pickup but I think you'll get the tones you want easier with a JB or DD (I agree with der scheiss here too).

if you have a DD now, use it. swap in a mag or two if its close to what you want but not dead on. if money is burning a hole in your pocket, go buy an FS.

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

Man Britny Fox. I'm an old hair metaler myself and still that's basically all I play. Michael did play LP's most of the time. I was getting good BF and basically all other hair metal tone out of the stock 498t on my LP Studio. It now has a Suhr Aldrich and it gets in that territory very well also. But I think, if you want Duncan, the C5 is pretty close to 498t (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Someone mentioned the 500t, I have an Explorer with that and I feel its to grainy for hair metal. Looking to replace it myself.

Yeah a 498T can do it or JB. Tons of JB's were sold in the 80's.

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

so since i have decided on the JB, would it be better in my kramer or my LP? Would putting it in my LP make it sound fatter due to the mahogany back? or would it kick more a** in my baretta since they used to come stock with JB's in the 80s anyways?

ive heard ppl say JB's dont sound good in LP's

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

I do think you'll want something along the lines of a Marshall JCM800 as an amp though.

Re: Michael Kelly Smith sound? (Britny Fox)

Put the JB in the Baretta. Put the Distortion in your Paul. End of story. You got 80's metal covered. If you make decent money, but a Full Shred for you LP. No offense meant, but that valve king ain't gonna get you to the land of hairspray and spandex.

You really need to look into some sort of Marshall. Preferably an 800 of some sort.
The 2205 and2210 channel switchers will get you there with no mods or pedals. Clean channel sucks though. But they weren't meant to be clean were they?
