mic'ing drums

the singer in my band is slowly but surely building up his own home studio. on friday we're getting the shure drum mic package with the 3 57's and the kick drum mic.

i was wondering, is there any difference in sound when you use the clips to hold the mic onto the drum, as opposed to putting the mics on stands? or is that something that we should play around with to see what kind of results we can get?

Re: mic'ing drums

Don't use the clips. They suck! Try to get enough mic stands for each mic. Much better for positioning & stability. Those clips hold like sh!t.

Re: mic'ing drums

that makes a lot of sense. it seems like stands would be a better choice just for that fact that you can position them however you'd like.

Re: mic'ing drums

Trust me. I have that kit. It's cool cuz u get a decent price for the mics & a real cool case to carry them in. But those clips are the worst! They are ass! They don't hold for sh!t, they limit your positioning and are big, bulky and worst of all, nosiy!

If u cant afford that many mic stands, borrow some for ur sessions.
