microkorg- waste or worth it?

I am considering picking up a microkorg off ebay for home studio recording. Before I take the plunge I'd like to know if it's a worthwhile addition to exsisting equipment [for under $300.00] or should I wait and get a higher end unit? It is a hobby studio and while I do require high quality sound I don't want to spend large $$$ on a top-end synth.

They are pretty neat if you can get past the tiny keys. The Alesis Micron might sound more authentic for the money, but the Microkorg is a bit easier to get into and start making cool sounds quickly. I was looking at the Microkorg, the MS2000, the Alesis Micron, and the Alesis Ion for a VA synth a while back, and I ended up with the Ion (same basic sound engine as the Micron--which I'm pretty happy with).

Why not just get a midi keyboard and trigger softsynths? The end result will sound much, much better than any cheap keyboard.

If you don't miss having a ton of real knobs in front of you, that's probably the most practical solution. There are so many emulations of classic synths out there. Soundforum Synth is free, and analogx.com has a free virtual midi instrument you can download.

That, and MRID is god.

Deadskinslayer36 here, was it time for your evey-other-month visit? :-p. We miss you, man!

They're pretty hip!

Great tones...not just for 'home studio' but big time cats use 'em A LOT.

Re: microkorg- waste or worth it?

The microkorg is great, it has the same synth engine as the MS2000 which I have owned.

As others have said though I think I would look into something like Reaktor if you have a good computer and a midi keyboard. Or one of the other great soft synths on the market. I use to be a purist because I was doing a lot of dance tracks and remixes and it was sort of required, not so much anymore as soft synths sound a lot better now.

Re: microkorg- waste or worth it?

Agreed that I could probably have scads more flexibility with a pc based production outfit. However the computer I'm online with now is not my own. So I'd have to buy a computer-I intend to build one strictly for recording but that's more green yet. Not to mention the pc will be obsolete before I get it home The Korg already is in some ways so I know I'm getting yesterdays news out of the gate. Also XP has done nothing to endear me to the pc. Are there any decent sound cards that will run with Linnix(SP?)

I run logic on Win XP and after tweeking XP it is very stable, no complaints and I use it every day.

And...the Micro is still great old or not it sounds fantastic for a VA synth.

my frind got hold of one, i thought it was a little user un-friendly, but you can get some amzing sounds just tinkling with it. the presets are also really good, but after a month or so uve pretty much got everything you want out of it.

Erm... how do you run Logic on XP?

Re: microkorg- waste or worth it?

For the most part XP hasn't given me a whole lot of trouble but it seems that they improved? the system by making it less stable and more top heavy-also when it does lock up it locks up tight. I've even had a "recommended security update" cause some processes to become inoperable...without ANOTHER PATCH!!! granted there's a lot of code involved but that is what ms makes the money for. My main gripe with windows is all the crap bundled into the os. If I want Quiken. I'll buy Quiken. Just a pet peeve I suppose.

I'm still on Logic 5 that's how. :) 5 does everything I need it to do even though I have a nice Mac that someday I'll upgrade and switch over to - actually I'll probably just get the new Macs and run XP on that and keep L5...nah, L7 is cool.

For an MIDI Keyboard/Controller, I would highly recommend any of the Novation line. You can pick up a Novation Remote 25 LE for 100 bucks at music123.com (incredible deal!)
