Microphone location tips?

This may very well be 100% a result of switching from DSL50 --> 4x12 cab (Fender) to DSL --> Hot Plate --> 2x12 cab (Greenbacks)… anyway…

The recorded sound was nothing to be too happy about. There was way too much sparkle in the highs for our tastes, and 5th chords on the A & D strings lacked any warmth or bottom end. The sound was very thin and brittle. We tried turning every knob, hitting switches, and eventually the only thing we could do to find a good sound was pull the mic (a Sennheiser E609) about 3 feet away from the cab and WAY off axis. The really beefed up the tone, but it sounded very distant (by itself, though, it was a rude, knarly, dirty, raunchy tone that I really liked, but like I said, distant). Power tubes (master volume) was set to around 8 and the gain (pre amp) was around 6. The Hot Plate load was set to -16 db and the roll off was at 3 o’clock (7 o’clock is virtually off, while 5 o’clock is -16 db). Straight to the ears, the new setup does have a slightly different, slightly better tone. However, the miked tone changed a bunch more with the new setup.

Can anyone offer any insight? Would the mic really react to the new setup with far more sensitivity than the ears? I really want to get this new sound “closer” in the mix, instead of sounding like it’s always looming in the background.
