so i want to get a mic that can do vocals and mic my Atomic. I want one that can do home recordings and keep up with gigs. right now my options are either the Shure sm57 or sm58. I know that the sm57 can do vocals and mic a cab just fine, but how does the 58 compare? Ive always heard that the 58 is much more rugged, but i really dont know how it compares to the 57's performance, especially in the area of micing cabs. im also open to other options. thanks.

Re: mics

Either one.

The SM 57 and SM 58 are all I use !!!!!!

Either one is a winner !!!

The SM 58 is thought of as more of a Vocal Mic,...while the 57 is thought of as more of an Instrument Mic..........

But,.....either one will do the job just fine !!!!!!!!!!

Re: mics

The 58 is essentially a 57 with a little spike in the upper mids to help the vocals stick out in the mix.
Although I practically never track vocals with either of them anymore, when I used to do vocal scratch tracks with them, I would grab the 57. To me, it just sounds better on MY voice than the 58. But this is subjective.
