Mics?

I'm not quite sure where the best place for this is, but I figure I might get some hits here.

Anyone know anything about Digital Reference mics, specifically the DR-VX1? They've got them on sale at GC, and I've been looking for an amp to mess around with to do recordings.

I've been wanting an SM57 or SM58 (both would be great!!), but I never can seem to save up for them. These are pretty cheap ($30 with stand and cord), so I thought it might at least get me started. I'd like something that will do both vocals and guitar, but I realize most mics are better for one or the other. I figure this is probably meant to be a vocal mic.

Linkage

Any experience, thoughts? Thanks!!

Re: Mics?

I can't speak to these mics, but my feeling is that it's a lot more worth it for you to save a few bucks and get a 57 or 58. You could probably find a decent deal on one in a pawnshop. You cannot go wrong with a 57/58 - they're as standard in the mic world as Les Pauls and Strats are to guitars. If you buy a cheapass mic, it'll eventually become one of those things that you can't bring yourself to get rid of cause you paid for it, but that you'll never use for anything cause you'll come to hate the sound so much. You really don't wanna do it.

If you're buying this strictly for vocals, get the 58, if it's general purpose get the 57. If in any doubt, get the 57, as you can always rig up a pop screen for vocals.

On the other hand, if your music shop is worth their salt, get the sales guy to set you and a friend up with a decent mixing board, and some headphones, and spend an hour trying out mics - not just the ones you're considering, but the big fancy condenser mics too. Then, after you've heard a bunch of really excellent mics, listen to the 57 and this cheapass one you're considering. If you can't tell the difference, go for it. :>

Re: Mics?

I got my 57 and 58 for about 55 each. Cheap mic's, and a 57 is definately the mic I'd pick if I could only have one. You can use that thing with great results on guitars, snares, and tom's, and still get decent vocal sounds. Hell, I've heard good results with a pair of them used to mic a room in a band practice (compressed to hell, of course), and good results as OH's.

Re: Mics?

Save for a 57- i piced my original up for a blistering £75 , but i cuningly found one on ebay for £10 + £15 shipping - ultra deal!

"Digital Reference" is a private-label thing that Audio-Technica makes for Guitar Center.

Personally, I'd avoid a $30 mic like the plague.

Spend at least $100 or so on a dynamic mic & you'll have something that you can use for a lifetime.

Spend less & you'll most likely end up with something that you'll toss inside of a few years or maybe even months.

Best,

Re: Mics?

Well, stupid Cebridge's internet was down this morning so I couldn't check this thread. This is starting to be a normal occurance. It may be time to switch.

I ended up going with a different mic. It's still a Digital Reference, but it's a little higher end. It's just to play around with here at home, so I figured what the heck. The stand and cable are worth $30.

I've got access to some older SM58s if I need to do some real recording or performing. I may grab one and try to compare these two. I'll mess around with this one and give a report on it. Thanks for the input, guys.
