Middle Pups in a Strat?

Is it worth actually buying a middle position pickup? I am going to be putting new pups in my Strat soon, and I don't know if it is worth spending another £70 on a middle position pickup. I am buying either Lil '59s or Jb Jrs or Hot Rails, so the middle won't be used for hum cancelling.

I feel like I'd only really be buying the middle pup so that I have 3 pups that look the same

Re: Middle Pups in a Strat?

If you want the classic quack positions in 2 and 4, you have no choice! I would recommend an antiquity or duckbuker-
cheers

If you don't use it, why buy it? You could probably get a pickguard that is cut for just neck and bridge if you want to lose the middle altogether.

If you do use it once in a while, see how your current one sound with the new pickups before you spend the money.

You won't get "classic" quack with those mini hums in the other positions anyway. Pretty much your call on that one.

Don't underestimate the middle pup! Once I watched a concert with Gary Moore at Montreux Jazz Live and he mainly used in his Fiesta Red Strat the middle pup for all the leads. And it sounded KILLER! ....wonder if there was stock fender pups.......

Re: Middle Pups in a Strat?

The middle pup is what makes a Strat a Strat.

I have a set of Kinmans in a MIM Strat and the middle pup is OUTSTANDING!!

Re: Middle Pups in a Strat?

I have an Antiquity Texas Hot in the middle pos of my strat and it is simply outstanding. I actually use all positions on my strat, but the middle when taken out of the tone circuit is one of my favorites. They all sound great though.

Noted.

At the moment, I think I will go for Lil '59/Stock/Lil '59. Then, when I have a bit more cash to spend, I will either go for a Vintage Rails or Antiquity Texas Hot middle.

Re: Middle Pups in a Strat?

If you don't really use notch positions or middles, just keep the stocker in there.....it's good enough. I'd at least make sure all the parts are the same color, so if you get black pickups, buy a black cover and knobs/switch tip.

Re: Middle Pups in a Strat?

some tasty splitting, phase and pup combo options with those two lil 59s! Tele tone -> neck and bridge together. Ah, the joy of push pulls.
