Middle Strat pup for Nashville Tele

B Bent

Vibroluxologist
I know more about Tele pups than Strats so I need someone to recommend me a good middle Strat pup. I know enough about the stock middle thats in there now to know I don't like it!!!

What are you guys using?

Re: Middle Strat pup for Nashville Tele

What tones are you chasing? Also, what are the neck and bridge pickups? Do you need noiseless operation?

It's definitely not a tradition Tele. Especially not a traditional B Bender Tele.

I have an SM-1 mini hum in the neck and a Lil 59 in the bridge. The stock Strat pup is still in the middle. Noise is not too much of an issue given the fact that it is still near silent when the middle is in use. I just want the nicest, warmest, fattest sounding Strat middle pup. Beleive it or not the hums that I am using work well with still getting Stratty tones when combined with the middle.

Re: Middle Strat pup for Nashville Tele

before i read "warmest fattest" i was going to say get a ssl1, but thats bright and spanky which i think is important to getting good notch position tones. if you want warm and still want to get some quack id go for an aps1

Thanks.

Greg, I believe what you have now is a Texas Special. They are stock in the Nash B-Benders. That's my pickup of choice for that guitar. It just seemed to work with all pickup combinations I would use.

Thanks Butch! I like the tones on my old B, but the MAIN thing I forgot to mention about this guitar is that I am convinced the pups that came in it from the guy I bought it from are Squire pups. That's my only reason for wanting to replace the middle one. It just doesn't sound good at all IMO.

Re: Middle Strat pup for Nashville Tele

i have middle APs1 for sale if you end up goin that route

Re: Middle Strat pup for Nashville Tele

APS-1 will definately work. If you don't want more output but still want a bit fatter sound, go with the APS-2.

Re: Middle Strat pup for Nashville Tele

Personally, I would stay away from anything in the lower-output range. The APS-1 & APS-2 are no excpetions. Having a lower-output middle pickup will cuase you to have to raise it up in order to balanace it with the neck and bridge pickups. You will run a better chance of it getting in your way. I would eiehter go with a Texas Special, Hot Stack, or SSL-6 Custom.

Re: Middle Strat pup for Nashville Tele

Take this as more of an observation, than a recommendation, 'cause I don't want to second guess what everyone else has said, but when I got my Tele Lil 59, (a few weeks ago), the first thing I mated with it was an APS-1, mainly because thats what I had sitting on the shelf. The Lil 59 is almost 3x the resistance of the APS-1, with a ceramic magnet vs an A2 to boot. Needless to say, the 59 dominated the APS-1 in output. I changed it to a Classic Stack pretty quickly. Even the CS is mild compared to the kick of the Tele Lil 59.

Just my 2-cents worth. :)
