midi pickup - playing tips?

got a set of Fishman triple play...installed exactly as specified...software running as it should...
have played midi keyboards for years and they react just like the real deal...
the guitar version however seem flaky...miss notes that are clearly played...phantom notes especially when playing a chord...all and all just doesn't seem to work that well for me...
Any tips on any special playing techniques would be greatly appreciated...

Re: midi pickup - playing tips?

I've got a word for you: Staccato.

The fretwork of the guitar must be completely flawless, or ghost notes ensue.

Less is more.

Having a classical guitar background helps a whole lot, as you're already used to play clean, technically speaking.

Playing a guitar synth is an art in itself.

Guitar synth has neither the feel of electric guitar or the reliability of keys...they are related, but you have to develop a clean style and find licks that work.

So concentrate on the things that work and make them better and avoid things that dont work until you understand limitations.

Also, bass strings take longer to read than trebble... If u have trouble getting bass to read, consider restringing all with 12s tuned to high e and then electrically tune to pitch with software.

Obviously can not be played as a regular electric if u do this, but midi performance can be greatly enhanced.

Re: midi pickup - playing tips?

Years ago my Aunt had a boyfriend that had the Roland(?)midi system on his guitar.
It was cool-ish, I guess but I could never deal with the latency. He made it work within the context of his band at the time but it was just never for me. I didn’t like it at all.

Re: midi pickup - playing tips?

Fishman has somehow figured out how to get the latency down to the point it is not an issue...the issue is finding a playing technique that works....both suggestions provided are excellent...the limitation is me, not the system...the patches they have are incredible....always thought Yamaha had midi sampling down to perfection but these next gen samples are definitely a giant step forward...the woodwind and flute samples are beautiful...until I try to play more than a few notes that is...

Re: midi pickup - playing tips?

this afternoon finding that this Fishman TP is like the ultimate in strict guitar teachers....the screen shows the note(s) you are hitting and the strength...great for practicing bends...also old songs that thought had down can see where I'm weak in multitudinal aspects....may never get good enough to use it as an instrument but will definitely keep using it as a learning tool...

Re: midi pickup - playing tips?

As a guitar synth player for over 30 years, you really have to understand all the mechanics and software options that can change the feel and response. Your technique has to be impeccable, and learn how other instruments phrase (and their ranges). I haven't used the TP but I've heard great things. I use my Roland system live.

Re: midi pickup - playing tips?

after working with this thing for a week think my playing has improved more than it has in the last two years...it is a huge help to be able to see what notes are being played and how hard they are being played on the fly...able to adjust, refine and improve with a precise visual aide...would highly recommend a tool like this to anybody learning to play guitar...
