Midrange priced 212 combo amp

hey guys, a buddy of mine is looking for a good 2 by 12 combo amp for around 600 give or take.

The only things he told me he was looking for were "nice cleans and badass distortion"... I'm not exactly sure what he means by that but I guess the distortion has to sound at least decent and useable for metal such as Metallica, Pantera, Children of Bodom, and that sort of thing.

Any suggestions?

Re: Midrange priced 212 combo amp

What about a Laney VC30? Not sure if this would give you the amount of gain your buddy needs, but you can always get pedals for that. I think the amp has 2 x EL34 and 4 x 12AX7's (Can never remember what you Americans call 'em, we call 'em ECC83's) so it's not going to be too far away from a Marshallesque sound. I'm sure this would come under $600 brand new, or it wouldn't be much over.

Alternatively, I'm guessing your mate's after a Marshall sound from the bands you listed, I'm sure you could get a JCM2000 s/h for around that money. Check Ebay. It's a soleless and sometimes risky way of buying stuff but you can't beat the prices.

Thanks,
Benja

Used 5150, hands down.

Re: Midrange priced 212 combo amp

I would suggest a nice crate or find a Tech 21 trademark 2x12 on ebay... i think finding a nice clean is easy but a good distortion is the hard one..

The valvestate combos.. the cheapest I've seen is above $600 IIRC... correct me if I'm wrong?

Re: Midrange priced 212 combo amp

I still say a 5150. Those things kick so much ass!

Re: Midrange priced 212 combo amp

i´ve heard that the built in effects make noise and that you should keep away from them, but i have never own an amp with built in effects... so maybe i´m wrong...
the Crate VFX5212's are the new amps from crate?

I've heard a lot of good things about the Traynors. Check them out as well. A used one can be had for less than what you are looking to spend.

Re: Midrange priced 212 combo amp

the 5150 combos do sound pretty good...I prefer them to the head version actually (which I had for quite awhile)...only thing is, I don't like the clean and rythm channel sharing the same buttons..and the cleans aren't all that great...

but the distortion...man, the distortion's nasty...
